my dog's eye is red -wwyd?

I just noticed that one of her eyes seems to be reddish.  She doesn't seem to be in pain and her behavior is the same. There's nothing else out of the ordinary that I can tell.  Just the white part looks pink.    Do you think I can just wait it out to see if it goes away on its own?

And this may be a really dumb question, but is there such a thing as dog pink eye?  I had planned to take her to the dog park tomorrow, but if she's got dog pink eye, I'd hate for her to spread it around.

 Thanks.

  • There is such a thing as dog pink eye. Has she had an injury to the eye at all? Any visible scratches or anything? If not, I think it may be an infection and she will need antibiotic eye drops.

No injury or scratches or anything.  She's part chihuahua and is prone to a bit of gunk in her eyes which I guess is normal. Right now the gunk situation looks normal and not any different in the pink eye than the other.

Poor thing.  Do you think this is something for dog ER tomorrow morning or can it wait until Monday?  I guess if it's worse and oozing, maybe dog ER in the morning.  Sigh...  I've got to leave for a 40th birthday party in a few minutes so I hope she'll be OK while I'm out.

  • From my experience, unless she's squinting, pawing/rubbing that eye you should be fine to wait till Mon. morning. Typically if it's a corneal scratch it's quite painful and she'd squint and/or paw at it. It may just be irritated. If she starts acting odd, not like herself you may want to call your vet. Hope that helps!

I agree. Our guy has red eyes from time to time, allergy related I believe, but over the summer he started squinting and pawing at his right eye. We brought him in and they put dye in his eye to check for a scratch, but didn't find one.

  • Thanks everyone.  It's looking a little gross this morning - more gunk and she's not opening it 100%.  I am just wiping it with a warm towel every hour or so to keep it clean.  She doesn't seem to be in pain though and is her normal self.  I'm going to skip the dog park today so she doesn't try to dig holes and get more dirt in there, and get her to the vet tomorrow morning.
