How to teach dog not to jump/off? (PIP)

We need to teach Maxx, not to jump on people when he's excited.  If we say "off" he'll get off, but I'd like to prevent him from even getting on people. He's 16 months and should know this by now, but he doesn't.  I'd like to fix this.

It drives me batty.  I'll be with him for a few days and have DH continue working with him (DH and I work in different places right now), and want to work on it with him.

Re: How to teach dog not to jump/off? (PIP)

  • Our dogs get super excited when company comes over for about 5-10mins before they calm down.  We've used high value treats (lunch meat Stella's freeze dried treats) and they'll focus on me and behave, and then be mildly excited for a few minutes and calm down.  We've also had guests completely ignore the dogs, turn from them when they jump, and don't acknowledge them at all and they tend to quiet down faster.  They're not getting reactions for their behavior.  We try to do this more and more when we have people over, especially with our puppy, a doxen, who has to bark at new people. It's annoying but we're hoping it'll taper off as he gets older and we keep up with it.  Good luck!
  • Thanks.  I'll try some of those techniques.  I know he's just excited, but not everyone likes dogs jumping on them and don't want to make people uncomfortable.
  • Ditto PP. We ignore Zoey, turn away from her, when she's super excited when I get home. She's still just a puppy (9months) so she can't always control herself when she's that happy, but she knows what to do immediately if I turn away because shes being too jumpy. I call it the "4 on the floor" rule. No attention and love until she's got all 4 paws planted!
