Greece Help

DH and I will be going to Greece for two weeks, the last week of April 1st week of May.  We will be spending a few days in each of the following places: Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Crete.

We have all of our hotels booked.  Any recommendations as to things to do while we're there??  We're hoping it'll be warm enough for the beach, are we crazy?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Greece Help

  • While I think the beaches will be mild, I'd be surprised if it's warm enough to swim/lay out weather.

Athens-- in addition to the usual tourist sights (Parthenon,  Agora, Plaxa, etc), I'd recommend going to the Grande Britannia for a cocktail at night (roof top bar is, admittedly, overpriced but a beautiful view of the Parthenon lit up).

Santorini-- We sailed over an climbed the volcano, very cool, great views.  That, IMO, was more enjoyable than the town (which, like Mykonos, is kind of touristy).

    Enjoy your trip!

  • We'll be going roughly the same time, though not as long. I've been a little worried about trying to get around or eating the weekend of the 14th due to Orthodox Easter, I've heard pretty much everything shuts down. We're flying back to Athens from Santorini that Sunday night and I can't chase the vision of us eating crackers in locked doorways trying to stave off hunger.

I guess I don't have much to add, I'm just here to piggyback off your post.

Eta: I just realized I read your post wrong, I thought you were going to be there the whole month and now my post REALLY adds nothing of value to your original request. Sorry.

  • In the town of Fira on Santorini is this little hole in the wall souvlaki place called Lucky's Souvlaki....AMAZING!!

I have to say we have traveled a lot but the sunsets in Santorini are by far the most beautiful we have seen. Oia has probably the best sunset, so try to get to a restaurant with a view early, the cruise ships like to dock there right in time and there is a swarm of people but it is breathtaking.

  • i did a cruise around greece (and italy) and have been to mykonos and santorini, which are two of the most beautiful places i have ever been to. so amazing. Santorini, i would recommend going up by donkey, definitely an experience I will never forget (i did it w/ my parents who were a riot).

is the blue grotto near there? that is something that I remember i really loved & would definitely recommend (it's been about 15 years, sorry!)

    enjoy!!!

  • I went to Athens and the island of Milos the middle of april '09. While the weather in athens was downright hot, on the island it was much cooler. Still beautiful but not swimming weather!. Sunny and 60's was the usual when I was there. Still great to sit outside though.

My favorite thing to do on the island was sit by the water (fully dressed) and read/write. Or, find a cafe and sit there for hours drinking coffee and eating pasteries! Greeks sure do love their coffee breaks :)

In athens, the touristy stuff is totally worth it. why go to athens without seeing the Parthenon? Aside from that, trying to venture into more local neighborhoods for meals kept out costs down and gave us more of the local culture!!

Hope that helps! Have an awesome trip!!!

  • We were just in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in September 2011.

In Athens, we just did the typical touristy because we really weren't there that long.  We did go to a Michelin Bib Gourmand place called Oikeo and the food was phenomenal.

In Mykonos, go to Mykonos Town and walk around and make sure to go to see the Windmills.

In Santorini our favorite thing to do was rent an ATV and drive around the island going to the wineries.  It was amazing views and so much fun!

  • In Paros, you can take a short ferry ride to Antiparos. It's a quieter island than Paros, or any of the other places you are visiting. It's nice to go there for a few hours and sit on a quiet beach or in a very uncrowded cafe. Because it's more difficult to get there (no flights there), it's a little cheaper and much more quiet, but it's not terribly interesting to stay there at night. Many Greeks go there to camp on the beach for a quiet weekend.
