Aside from filing a police report (which was already done), what else can I do? First it was packages that came to the house so we started having stuff sent to my office. Now it's my newspaper!! I can't have the newspaper sent to my office too (we only have Thurs & Sun delivery). It comes anywhere between 5:30 and 7:00am so I can't necessarily set an alarm for a certain time and hold vigil on my front porch waiting for it. I already called customer service to tell them to stick it in the mailbox but they never do (on the few days I actually get it it's always on the driveway). And I doubt the delivery person is going to abide a "special instruction" to come up to the porch or leave it on the back porch (where if someone wants it enough they'll swipe it no matter what).
No one on the street "likes" us (we are the new construction a-holes who upset the water table) so it's not like we have any neighbors in our corner willing to "look out" for us or anything. And I really don't want to go to the other new house neighbors who just moved in 2 weeks ago and be like "hi welcome to the neighborhood can you keep a look out for people stealing our sh*t?"
We're having security cameras installed next week which is going to cost us $$$$. And who even knows if it will deter thieves or solve the problem anyway.
I feel helpless and wish I was still back in my townhouse. Thanks for letting me vent.
Re: I need to vent: People stealing things off my property...
I feel for you. I put a ton of clothes out for charity last month at around 11pm. It was gone by 7:30 and the charity did not take them. I am so pissed. They were clearly marks for charity!!!!! And I live on the last block of a dead end so we rarely get traffic that isn't neighbors.
Plus we are new construction a-holes too
that is crazy.
is the paper gone EVERY day? I'd wake up very early and watch for it the whole time if it is...
otherwise i'd say the cameras should do the job - and i'd call the police once you have the evidence.
crazy.
No one outside of USPS is allowed to put anything in your mailbox so they can't abide by that request. You CAN ask them to put it somewhere else, though you're right that it won't deter thieves. This situation is just insane.

95% of the time I get Thursdays paper. It was missing once last month. This is the 2nd Sunday in a row we did not get the Sunday edition. And I think 2-3 weeks before that it was gone once as well. The newspaper thing happened AFTER the 3 Christmas packages we ordered got swiped. (luckily Amazon was amazing and credited us back the money for 2 of the packages plus $5 extra for the trouble. the 3rd vendor reshipped to my office at no additional fee).
I should have been more clear with "in the mailbox". We have a newspaper compartment underneath (but still attached) to the main part of the mailbox which doesn't have a flap on it to open. It's just a compartment that you can stick a newspaper into. The mailbox came with it. But I guess if that rule applies then it's still technically the mailbox and hence why they can't put it there.
We're already paid up to March so Ed doesn't want to cancel it at least until then. Plus we want to see how well the cameras work anyway so we'd need some sort of "trap". Newspapers are a cheap trap. Installation people come this Friday!! I hope the money we're spending will be worth it. I daydream daily about the satisfaction we'll get once we (hopefully) catch this a-hole.

Did you confirm that the paper was delivered?
we only get the paper from fri-sun and sometimes there are different people delivering and we get "over looked".
If it was taken I would invest in camera's. We have several for the perimeter of our property and it has helped us many times, even with our neighbor having her house broken into. It is $$ but worth it for our peice of mind. Sorry this is happening to you.
This exactly! I am beginning to think that there are many many people in this world who have a stunted emotional growth. Amazing!
I think the cameras are a good idea, but I'd wake up early on a Sunday and wait for that person to catch them.
I was thinking the same thing...are you sure they are even delivering the paper?
I'd look into getting one of those exploding dye packs the banks hide in money when they're robbed, and send it to myself in a package. Problem solved.
