Moms of 2+ - carseat question

DS is in a convertible carseat on the side behind the front passenger seat. His infant seat was in the same spot. When we install the infant seat for #2, do we put it behind me (the drivers side) or do we move DS behind me and put the baby behind the passenger? Basically does it matter what side the infant is on, or is it just personal preference? We have a Pilot, so space isn't an issue.

Re: Moms of 2+ - carseat question

  • I don't think it matters. Our inspection place would only install the infant seat behind the driver, so that's where we have it. But I've heard others install it on the other side.

  • I don't think there is a "rule." We installed the infant seat behind the driver because it is rear facing.  The rear facing seat on the passengers side completely blocks my view and makes the blind spot 100x worse.

  • I put the baby behind the driver's out of laziness - if I was going out w/ just one child, it was most likely the baby (Ryan was in daycare part-time during my maternity leave) and this way I didn't have to keep going around the car a hundred times. ;)

I've heard people say to put the baby behind the passenger seat so that you're not pulling out an infant seat on the side of the road if you're parking on a street, but I have to parallel park so infrequently that it's not an issue for me.

  • We have the infant seat on the passenger side simply because we can't fit a rear-facing seat behind the driver when MH drives.

Beyond that I've heard arguements in favor of both sides.

  • It doesn't matter at all. I have Emma behind me because the RF seat doesn't fit behind the passenger seat with DH in it and I drive more than he does. I also like being able to hand things to Julia and she can hand things to Emma as needed. Emma's a tease, so she would hold onto anything that was supposed to go to her sister just to annoy her.

  • We have Zach behind the driver's seat and Gabe behind the passenger's seat. Zach is in an infant seat and Gabe is in a convertible seat. I park my car on the street and I want Gabe to be able to step right out onto the sidewalk. I'm too afraid he would bolt into the street if we put him behind the driver's seat! Hubby parks in the driveway so the seating is irrelevant in terms of his truck...however, hubby takes Gabe out A LOT by himself and he doesn't want him kicking him while he is driving!!!!
