How contagious is the stomach bug?

We were at a party tonight with neighbors. We knew yesterday that their younger daughter had been sick Thursday but was at a dance class Saturday, not with Katie but at the same place. At the party the mom told us she had been sick all yesterday afternoon but was fine today. So far the husband and older daughter are fine.

Are we doomed to get this thing? Obviously the kids were all playing together and the mom was touching everything. I hate, hate, hate vomit.

Re: How contagious is the stomach bug?

  • She had her kid at a party 1 day later? That's just f'd up. I don't know if you're doomed but your odds aren't good. I'd be livid!

  • VERY! VERY! VERY!

Ethan had it, passed to to me, Reid, my parents (who watch him during the week), my uncle who visited my mom's house.  A week later...yes, a full week later my sister and her daughter got it, we are assuming, from Ethan.

I would NOT be happy that they had her at a party the day after she had a stomach bug!  UGH!  I'm bothered for you!

  • It was the MOM who had been sick yesterday, like 24 hours ago. I didn't even know what to say when she told me she had spent the afternoon vomiting.
  • Nicholas had it Thursday night...nobody in the house got it. My MIL who watched him Thursday and Friday didn't get it either. We think he got it from his classmate at school who had it earlier that week.

OHH...that makes it a little better, assuming the mom has better hygiene than the standard kid.  You may be okay!  I had it on Wednesday into Thursday and went back to work Friday.

  • I already feel blah since we interacted with the daughter who had been sick Thursday and the mom who was sick last night but I guess there's nothing to do but wait and see what happens. I've been so scared of this damn bug and done everything I could to avoid it. Sigh.
  • I know everyone is saying that's f-ed up, but really how much more protection do you get from the 24 hour daycare rule?  Since it was the mom, I think there is an excellent chance no one will get it since washing hands, cleaning the bathroom and surfaces lots of people touch can keep it from spreading.  Even last year when Teagan got it I didn't get it like previous years. I am pretty sure the difference was her ability to really wash her hands well and to puke in a bucket and not somewhere I had to clean it up.  DH didn't get it either.

  • Very - my nephew got it from someone at school, and it circulated in my sister's house among all three kids and my sister for the next two weeks. My sister got it twice. Only my BIL escaped it.

  • I'm really happy to hear that there's a better chance we won't get it because of better hygiene. Keeping my fingers crossed.
  • W's had it since Friday AM and J and I are fine. My sister, nephew and J's bff are all here - taking their chances.

He's so weird though....he ate oatmeal this morning and was fine. Had 1/2 a pb&j and was still fine. Hung out all afternoon and was fine. Had a few cheeze doodles (how do you nosh on superbowl crap and tell your 3.5 year old he can't have a few?) Was fine for at least 2 hours and then puked them all up. And then he cried hysterically 10 minutes later that he was starving and wanted pizza. I don't understand.....he's all over the place. And I'm exhausted.

  • My kids are in daycare.  They've each only had the stomach bug once, they're 3 1/2 and 19 months.  my husband and I have never had it.  I have no idea why.  Everyone is different.  So, no, I don't think you're doomed.  But it is crappy that she'd bring that mess to a party.  So rude!
  • Very, and my understanding is that the contagious period is actually four days before symptoms appear (so you're contagious before you're even throwing up, not afterward, except of course if you're vomitting on someone).

Interesting, thank you! I didn't know that. I've heard the incubation period is 36 hours (and this holds true for the time frame between daughter and mom getting sick) so I guess we'll know sometime in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow if we're going to be the next victims.

  • Here's hoping you guys are fine!!!  (My daughter and husband got the bug JUST as the hurricane hit our area, so I was taking care of her, him, the baby, and the water rushing inside our fireplace and both the baby and I were spared.) It is possible you'll be okay!
