Flying with puppy

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all your advice so far on bringing a new puppy into our family. The day is almost here and we are so excited! On Friday, I am flying to get her (2.5 hr flight) in the early morning and then flying back with her on the last flight of the day. I have made some preparations for the flight but wanted to see if you had any suggestions.

She will be traveling in a soft-sided Sherpa. I was thinking of lining it with those puppy training pads (even though I am not using them for housetraining) and bringing some extra for cleaning up messes. I am planning on bringing a bowl, a few small chewtoys, kibble, some treats, her collar, ID tag, and leash.  Can you think of anything else?

Also our top name choices are Luna, Scout, Zelda, and Bear but we are planning to get to know her more before we figure out which if any of those fit.

Thanks in advance, and of course I'll be back with puppy pics!

Re: Flying with puppy

  • I'm excited for you!  I flew home with my puppy in a Sherpa and things went fine.  I would line it with a pad and take some paper towels just in case.  I wouldn't feed her though because puppies usually need to potty right after they eat.  If anything, I would give a little water.  Instead of treats, I would just use praise and stick your finger in the crate to help calm if needed.  You will want a collar and leash, but know that when you go through security, she needs to come out of the carrier to go through the metal detector with you.  I believe that I had to take his collar off because of the little metal rings.

This was my boy on our flight home, we flew Southwest so it was a direct flight.

  • Thanks so much for the advice especially about the feeding! He looks quite adorable in his Sherpa. I am also flying Southwest so it will be direct. I don't know how I am going to get any work done at all this week!

  • You can probably buy a collar with plastic buckles if you want to keep one on him during the security screening.  Good luck!

Ditto all of this (includeing the airline).  G just slept the whole time I flew with her (at 9ish weeks). The perk of flying with a puppy, they're too tired from growing to do anything but sleep.  :)
