S/O Madonna

I'm a huge old school Madonna fan.  Everything after the Immaculate Collection - eh.  That's a little extreme...

Anyway, her new song.  Did anyone else feel like she's too old to be:
A) dressed as a cheerleader
B) singing a song that sounded like it was meant for a 19 year old
C) collaborating with MIA and Nikki Minaj (sp?)
D) any combo of the above

I just dislike MIA and Nikki Minaj, and if Madonna did a duet with someone else that was their age, I would probably feel differently.

Re: S/O Madonna

  • I hate that song.  It reminds me of Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend."

And I agree on everything you said.  The last Madonna song I liked was "4 Minutes" but that's probably because Justin Timberlake sang part of it.  Big Smile

Totally agree with this. Love the Immaculate Collection!!

I stopped watching after Vogue, but I'm sure I'd agree with you about the rest!

  • I agree on all counts. DH was like, why is a 50 year old singing this song? It was too Britney Spears-ish for me.
  • I though Madonna KILLED IT - she was awesome.

I didn't totally love the cheerleader-y song, but I'd rather have her out there than some old.ass rock band like U2, Aerosmith, etc. trying to dance and put on a "show" Madonna is above all else a "performer" and she performed and it was amazing.  You also have to remember who the audience was/is - and it is an older audience.

  • I love early Madonna stuff and always sing along when one of her songs pops up when I'm listening to "Debbie Gibson Radio" on Pandora.  Stick out tongue

I'm not too familiar with any of her more recent stuff, but I'm not a fan of her new song.

Some radio channel was comparing it to Toni Basil's "Mickey" last week, I think...

    Yes

And with regards to her performing with someone her own age... like who? There aren't many currently relevant performers who are her age, and I can't think of a single person in pop who's a Big Deal right now and over the age of, say, 30.  ETA: Sorry, that wasn't the point of your age comment, Andrea, I misread. Disregard that point!

  • She was ruling the stage with the vogue stuff but the rest, it looked very awkward, like she was trying to keep up with a simple routine, some have said unrehearsed...but that's when you really noticed the lip synching!!!

  • I thought she looked pretty good and sounded okay, but overall the whole performance was just kind of okay in my opinion.  It seems really divisive though - people either loved it or hated it.

I think the benefit of using people such as her though, and the Who, and Tom Petty, and Springsteen - isn't necessarily their fan bases, but its how they are used to performing. For Madonna, Springsteen etc performing in a stadium to a sold out crowd on national tv is just another day at work.  Sure, it's a big deal to be the half-time show, but for acts of that caliber they've done other "big deal" shows before and I think it shows.

LOL.  I think U2 would be awesome at halftime again.
