Dry Skin Question

Jackson seems to have really dry skin this winter.  He had it last year too but it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.  Because he's all black, it's really easy to see too and kind of gross.  We've been giving him fish oil tablets and putting a little oil in his food.  These don't seem to be cutting it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or home remedies for this?  Please and thank you.

Re: Dry Skin Question

  • What food does he eat? Do you have a humidfier at your house? (Helps my skin anyway! :-))

  • We feed him Blue Buffalo.  We don't have a humidifier but I can get one - it does help me in the winter too.

  • How often do you bathe him, and what do you use?  It's possible the shampoo is contributing to the dry skin.

  • We don't bathe him super often - it's been at least a month.  We take him to a place that has a 'self dog wash'.  He's too much to bathe at home, and it's too expensive to take him to Petco or Petsmart etc.  I'm not sure what shampoo is there, but they are a very organic, holistic place.  Not that the shampoo couldn't be contributing.  Good question though - the next time we take him there, I'll have to ask.

  • Try adding coconut oil.  Also, if you're giving fish oil you should also give vitamin E.
