So if you don't bring a car seat on the plane...
What do you do if you need one where you're going?
We don't fly enough to invest in some kind of case for our car seat and we need it when we get where we're going. Do you just check it? I was told not to since the baggage handlers can damage it without you noticing.
We're flying in about 6 weeks and I'm sure we'll end up just bringing it on the plane like we've done in the past but I'm curious what other people do.
Re: So if you don't bring a car seat on the plane...
honestly at her age i'd bring it on the plane. we flew with belle when she was about that age and i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad we had the car seat. we didn't have to deal with her playing wtih the seat belts. i knew she was safe and secure. she is familiar with her car seat and it was more comfortable for her to sleep.
Yeah, this is why we'll just stick with what we've done before. But I'm glad to know a bag is relatively cheap. The things people recommended were $100 and the seat was barely that much.
Sadly, no. But I appreciate the offer. What kind of bag is it?
I don't even know the brand to tell you the truth - it's just a giant bag made with a nylon type material (but tougher feeling) that fits a car seat PLUS more shyte in it if you needed.
I think it's this one, now that I see it, but I could be wrong...

A carrying strap would be nice. And $20 ain't bad. My husband usually carries the thing on his head and gets awesome looks from people as we're walking through the airport. I'd hate to give that up. ;P
haha - i can so picture my husband doing that. Honestly, it's so big that you can stuff other stuff in there. Sometimes, our suitcases are over 50 lbs (because my husband is HUGE and his pants alone weigh like 8!!) so we'll transport stuff into there and gate check it..
Awesome. Does it fold up small when you aren't using it? Because storing it the 11 months, 3 weeks and 4 days out of the year we aren't using it is going to be the selling point for my husband.
I mean, you can't fold it to "fit in your purse" small, but it's easily stored - you can smoosh it down. It's not likea suitcase, where it takes up space. Think more like backpack material, where you can basically smoosh it into whatever space you need to in storage.
That works. If we can store it inside our suitcases in the garage that works for me.
oh def - without a doubt.
Thank you so much for the offer. That's really nice of you! The strap is pretty much the only reason we would need it, though. And $20 isn't too bad, especially if we can stick other things in it.
I agree. It is a PITA that the strap is broken. I guess I could buy a new strap! And we totally stick other stuff in there too, it is nice to have the extra space!
I haven't flown since Julia was really little, but wanted to clarify the concern with checking seats. It's not that airport staff will sit and bounce your seat down the runway. Baggage handlers don't know how to care for carseats there's a risk of heavy luggage ending up dropped on them or they may spend the entire trip at the bottom of a pile of heavy luggage. There may not be visible damage but there could still be damage that would compromise the integrity of the seat in an accident. Also, if you regular check it there's always the risk that it will get lost, which would leave you stranded at the airport.
I had a friend whose minivan rolled 3 times. All of her kids were in seats and nobody was injured (thankfully). Her seats had no visible damage whatsoever, but given the severity of her accident there's no chance those seats could be trusted not to break in a future accident, so of course they were replaced. Just because you can't see damage does not mean a seat is safe to use.
