what is speech therapy for a 23 month old like?

We just had our EI evaluation and just like I thought, my son qualified for speech.  There seems to be a bunch of nesties on here with kids in speech therapy.  Can you tell me what's it like for this age group?

Re: what is speech therapy for a 23 month old like?

  • I think a lot depends on your individual child's delay.  My DS started JUST after he turned 2 (so 24 months) and his speech therapist was initially working on getting my son to say single words, since he actually had a good vocabulary but wasn't spontaneously speaking.

They use a lot of toys to prompt speech. At first just labeling items. Then moving to descriptive words (ie. big, little). Now we're working on "I want __" and "Give me __" along with ings (like sleeping or dancing). DS will be 30 months next week and after 6 months in EI, he is consistently using 2-3 word sentences and is asking questions. "What's that?" is most frequent.

  • Grayson goes to a private therapist b/c our insurance covers it that way.... but for a little bit we went with EI - and she'd come to the house and basically just play with him for about 50 minutes... and then took a few minutes to write notes- then go over stuff with me.

It's all play based - but the therapists know WHAT to play, and how to verbalize things and encourage the child to --- that's how they build it up.

Grayson has been going for almost a year now and is doing amazing. He started around 18-20mo, and is 31mo now...  I think he's still going to qualify for expressive, but his receptive is testing at age 5 right now b/c he knows shapes/colors... when a year ago his receptive was 25% delayed - now it's above!  He also got tubes - which helped a LOT for hearing.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • Like the other ladies said, it's mostly play-based learning. Jackson spends most of the time either repeating sounds, pointing, completing tasks, or imitating. He's only been going a month and a half, but he's finally able to point on his own and is babbling a lot more.
