Priceline?

Anyone here know how to use priceline? How does it work? The negotiating part...

My nieces birthday is in a couple weeks and DH just told me I should go...tickets are at like..$450 right now and priceline does that negotiating thing. But I am scared!

Re: Priceline?

  • I've always been very wary of using Priceline for flights, and this article gives an excellent overview of when it's NOT good to it.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • We did it once when we had to go somewhere for a funeral and flight prices were really high.  The flight times and connections were kind of crazy, but we did save a lot of money.
  • Also, we planned to be there for a week, so we were okay with the crazy flight times.  It's not like we were going to take a red eye from Friday to Saturday and then another red eye leaving on Sunday.
  • Yes, I don't suggest using Priceline for flights.

Prices have been high recently.  What flexibility do you have with respect to departure and arrival airport?  Have you checked carriers like Southwest, AirTran, JetBlue?  Have you tried a search engine like Hipmunk?  Are you tracking flight prices using Yapta?  Do you have credit card rewards points you can put toward a more expensive ticket?

  • We've only ever used it for Cars (which I think is a great deal! ~ it's worked perfectly for us every time) I'm always a little skeptical about the flights too since you don't know when you will be flying, but if you have a flexibleschedule I think it'd be worth it.
  • you might get a better idea of times with hotwire

  • Check out better bidding dot com & bidding for travel dot com.  Both explain Priceline.

If you have time tables it won't work for convenient direct flights.  Remember they are selling you the seats they couldn't sell.  The good ones are taken so what's left?

    Priceline for hotels is great.

I'd check out kayak.com & click the boxes that say check other airports nearby.  We got R/T tickets from Philly to LAX for this summer for $260.  The ideal APs would have been EWR & SNA but the 1/2 hour extra drive time for the ones we got is no big deal compared to the $300 pp we saved.
