My new town has awesome pet laws.
Dh and I recently moved to an new state and I was looking up pet ordinances. This area is really trying to crack down on unwanted kittens and puppies. For every year your animal goes unaltered, you have to pay an intact animal registration fee. You also have to pay a fee for every litter that is produced (intentional or not). If you have an unintentional litter, the owner of the female has to pay a fine for not keeping her properly contained while she's in heat. However, the litter fees will be refunded if you have your animals altered within a certain time-frame after the litter is born.
I think my new town is pretty awesome.

That is awesome!
Jealous!
Our county just made a rule that if you live in the city limits you can only have 3 pets (dogs and cats combined!). Not sure how I feel about that one...
We have the same rule. I have five pets. I thumb my nose at that law! That is an unconstitutional law and there is precedence that would make it hard to enforce unless having more pets is causing a health and safety hazard to your community.
I'm not sure how that works. Obviously they're wanting to cut down on hoarding and make sure that people can care for what they have but the people that are problems already have all their pets?? It is such a long-range goal I guess.
It is just weird, too, because my part of the county doesn't even have a leash law so how can the city limits make a law like this!?
OP: That is a great area you live in!
To pepomntpat and branny - my town has a law that you can only have 2 dogs. If you move to this town and already own 3 or more they will grandfather you in but only for the duration of those dogs' lives. We have 2 and always foster a 3rd and nobody has said or done anything. I kind of see where they thought it would be a good idea but I don't completely agree with it!!
""No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you're the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside."
"On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered "Life will never be the same." Because there had never been anyone like you... ever in the world." ~ Nancy Tillman
Our city has something similar. If you have more than 3 cats/dogs/rabbits, you have to pay a one time fee for a license ( I don't remember the title, but it was cheap). If you have more than 7, you have to get a different license.
The city does love their shelters and recognized rescues are exempt from a lot of this.
As to how the little/unaltered animal registrations are enforced? My guess is that it is by people calling in and reporting.
