Rash that comes and goes?

My 21 month old DS developed a weird rash with small red bumps on back of neck, some on legs, belly, a few bumps on face. The Ped wasn't sure what it was, but said it might be a virus. He was on an antibiotic for 8 days and then got this rash, so I thought maybe he developed a reaction to the medication. He has been off of the medication for 3 days now and the rash/small bumps come and go right in front of my eyes. All of a sudden I see red bumps (almost like a few mosquito bites next to each other), then 10 minutes later they are gone. I plan to call the Ped again tomorrow if I still see the spots, but this is weird! Anyone ever deal with mysterious rashes with their LO? Thanks

Re: Rash that comes and goes?

  • I don't know about it coming and going, but my daughter got a similar sounding rash when on amoxicillin for an ear infection around Thanksgiving. It was on the 7th day of the medication (the day before T-day) and we just talked to the pedi over the phone twice and he saw her on the following Monday - by then it had cleared up.  He said without seeing it, he couldn't say for sure if it was reaction to the meds (allergic or non-allergenic) or if it was just a viral rash, but to be safe, she is considered "allergic" to all -cillins now.

  • Does it happen right after a bath or when he had been crying and gets himself worked up to the point of being really hot?

I have heat activated ezyma and the rash comes and goes based on my body temp.
