Thrush...

We have thrush, my poor little guy has white patches on the roof of his mouth, we have been on meds for a week, but I am not sure it's working.  Anyone have tips on getting rid of this?

Re: Thrush...

  • Oh no! I hope it's not too uncomfortable for Eben-- although, judging by his recent smiling photos, I'm guessing he's just rolling with it...

If you have some swabs, you can dip one in Listerine and try swabbing his mouth out with it. But it's really drying and he obviously can't swallow any of it (which could prove tricky).

I'm surprised the meds haven't worked yet-- they usually work pretty quickly (at least on our adult patients). What's the doc say?

  • I don't have any tips.

Sorry for Mama Glitz and Eben!

  • I have no advice. I thought we had it too but my midwife said they don't get it this young. Now I'm wondering since him and Eben are the same age!! Anyways...hope you guys feel better soon!!! Maybe they can give you a different medication?? I've read that you really need to clean everything, clothes, pump, etc really well so you don't keep on reinfecting yourselves.
  • BFing group is tonight if you wanted Janet (the LC) to take a look and give you some tips.
  • Ugh! I'm sorry! I hope it gets better soon! I have no advice either Sad
  • I had a really nasty bout of thrush/yeast infection right around the same time, and it was really unpleasant! My LC at Midcoast recommended I use Gentian Violet over night for a week (put it on after the last night time feeding, it will dye your nipple deep purple which is crazy, and ruins clothes and will dye the inside of baby's mouth during the first morning feeding- very strange!), and put on APNO after every feeding to protect. The thing that really made the difference was taking Grapefruit Seed Extract capsules. I take Solaray Yeast Fighting formula 3xs a day and it has saved me! It's a PITA to have to take them until Will weans, but it's worth it to keep us both safe. Good luck!

  • I had thrush, although Marcus did not seem to have it in his mouth.  I did monistat and APNO on my nipples, gentian violet (what a mess!), and several courses of difulcan and did not get better.  What really helped for us too, was the grapefruit seed extra.  I swabbed my nipples in it after every feeding, and that seems to be what finally kicked it.  I'd look into how that might help to help treat Eben.
