Reason #3489726 not to leave your dogs outside unattended

Note: The dogs are ok.  And fortunately, this is *highly* unlikely to happen.  But it did happen here, and it could have turned out a lot worse. It's an awful story, and these people are reprehensible.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Authorities are investigating another case of animal cruelty after two men were spotted throwing two dogs over a bridge late Monday afternoon.

Witnesses say they saw the men open the door of their blue van and throw the dogs over the northbound lane of the Interstate 680 bridge onto Midlothian Boulevard.

Humane Agent Kyle Ziegler says the dogs were not moving at first, probably in shock, but quickly bounced back.

Motorists quickly came to the aid of the dogs.

Akita mix Thor and Beagle mix Sadie survived and were taken to animal charity where they were checked over for minor injuries. X-rays showed no broken bones, but Thor did have a bruised lung.

The owners of the dogs say someone took them from their fenced in yard on Lemoyne Avenue earlier in the day.

Jaime Jones of Youngstown says, "I don't know if this is connected with all the other cruelty that's been going on with dogs recently or not. I don't understand how people can do this. My dogs are just as important to me as my children are. I know a lot of people that are like that. I think whatever is going on now is scary."

Sadie's owner, Tom Watson, says whoever did this will just keep on doing it. "If you ask me, it's something that's going to escalate further if they're not caught. Maybe more animals, people, etc."

Youngstown police and humane agents are still trying to pin down the owners of that blue van and they continue to investigate other cases of animal cruelty.

"There has been a recent spike in animal cruelty. A lot more incidents happening in public areas; the WRTA incident, this incident. We don't know what the cause is for the increases in abuse and neglect," Ziegler said.
