Unscented body wash/lotion

Obviously throughout any pregnancy there will be people telling each other what to do/what not to do etc.

I have very dry and itchy skin and always have. I tend to find certain lotions/body wash that work for me and stick with that forever.

Someone told me that I need to switch to unscented lotion and wash as my baby will not be able to recognize my smell if I use scented.

The stuff I currently use is scented. Is the above true? I need to probably switch asap but afraid I won't be able to find one right away.

Was just wondering. Also, maybe everyone is different and if I have to switch I will, but thought I'd ask.

Re: Unscented body wash/lotion

  • I have never heard of baby not being able to recognize its mother's smell.

One reason why you would want to switch, though, is because their skin is very sensitive straight out of the womb and, especially if you're BFing, could affect them.

I use Cetaphil and whatever baby wash I've got for the baby that day.  Have you checked into Arbonne at all?  A friend gifted us their baby line and it's really great - and free from artificial ingredients.

  • I didn't switch lotions or body wash and haven't had any issues with baby's skin or bf.

I use Caress (the white kind) body soap and just a Vaseline brand lotion.  Both are barely scented.

  • I've never heard of that, but I think it is a good idea to go unscented anyway. Baby skin and senses are so sensitive and I would hate to have their little noses filled with perfume. I know scent really irritates my kid's skin. I use Cetaphil bar soap for myself due to my own dry, itchy, sensitive skin. I use Vanicream for lotion.
  • I never stopped using any of my reg. products, including perfume. As a new mom, it's nice to feel like yourself. Although DD never had sensitive skin.

  • use what you want to use. I switch washes and lotions all the time and trust me L knows who I am.
  • I can't imagine your own child not recognizing your smell regardless of what you use on your skin.

I use unscented body wash (occasionally I will use one with lavender or tea tree oils) and a mixture of grapeseed & jojoba oil for my skin afterwards.

    (obviously I am a dirty hippie). ;)
