Has anyone's kid done horseback riding camp or lessons?

I'm thinking about camp options and there's a ranch very close to my house that offers 1 week camps.  Just wondering if she'll really get anything out of it just doing a week or is it something that we need to continue with to make worthwhile.  Thanks for any input.

Re: Has anyone's kid done horseback riding camp or lessons?

  • No kids but when I was a kid I did riding camp for a week or two at a time each summer. I loved it. The thing I got most out of it was how to care for the horse. We mucked stalls, washed, brushed, fed the horses and I really appreciated that. I did take lessons as well after the camps once a week on the weekends but to learn the basics of riding and horse care camp was great. That being said I'd put her in at least one lesson or two before signing up for camp if she hasn't taken one before. Make sure she loves it and that she likes the place where camp will take place.
  • My daughter takes lessons. About a year ago, she told me (randomly) that she wanted to ride a horse. I found a farm (and they offered a free intro lesson) and she's been hooked (and I do mean hooked) ever since. I would definitely try to get her in for a lesson or 2 before you sign her up for camp.

  • Thanks for the suggestion ladies...will look into taking a few lessons.  She's only been on ponies at parties lol!

  • My niece does lessons and camps. She loves but she also rides 4 days a week and shows. I am signing Paige up for a camp this summer where my niece goes since she loves going to the farm and helping all the time.

  • yeah I live in horse country and all the girls take lessons. We are signing Reilly up for lessons first before we do a camp and invest in it. Good luck!
