anyone know a lot about outer banks in NC?

my mom is talking about renting a house on the beach in outerbanks this summer for my whole family (sister, bro & families).

she was in touch w/ a real estate agent who mentioned a town called cordova (i think that is it).  when i looked at it online, it said no cars unless you have 4 wheel drive.  does that make sense?  are all of the towns like that?

w/ 2 kids and a boatload of stuff to bring (we would be driving), we'd want to be able to drive right up to the house.

also, can you recommend any other towns?  do any towns have "activities" for the kids.

any insight you can offer would be appreciated!!

ETA: I just looked up the town - it is called Carova; When I did a google search, it said there are no paved roads & you need 4 wheel drive.

Re: anyone know a lot about outer banks in NC?

  • We've been to both the Outer Banks and a place further south called Topsail Island. I think the town in OBX that you're talking about is Corolla.  I wouldn't recommend that particular town because of exactly what you mentioned.  Topsail Island is much better imo because of the fact that if you get an Oceanfront Home, you are literally right on the beach.  You would be able to set up on the beach and then go back into the house easily for naps, lunch, etc...  With OBX, even most Oceanfront have a walk over the dunes. But if you decide on OBX, I would stick with Kitty Hawk or the more centralized, populated areas for more activity options. I have a few great websites for vacation homes at both locations.  Let me know :)

  • I would look into houses in Duck or Southern Shores.  That is correct about Corolla.. you need 4WD.

  • Just to clarify what pp said, Corolla does have some 4wd access (one year we stayed in the house that was 2 down from the beach access) but in generally it's a really nice area. Lots of houses that you drive right up to and have lots of amenities. That's where we stayed with my family a year and a half ago.  I think what you are talking about is different and further north.

North on the island there isn't all that much for kids to do. You've got the beach and the playground at the tim buck too shopping center.  There is an environmental center that has programs I believe, we only walking around on our own.  There is an aquarium but that is way way south.  We didn't really need to do all that much other than the beach. Teagan was 3.5 and wanted to go every day

That's totally wrong. I just googled it. It's Carova you must be talking about.

We drove on the beach and needed 4WD..tons of signs!  . We saw houses and thought you could only get to them from the beach.... but I must be wrong.   Sorry.   Just assumed you needed it.

    Not sure where Carova is.

  • Hi!  I'd recommend Corolla you do not need 4WD (unless you stay far north).  I'd recommend areas near Tim Buck 2 (which is a small shopping center theres also a grocery store very near by).  You're also near the lighthouse and whale head club and the beaches are very nice.  We've also stayed in Duck, but I find that the houses in Corolla are newer / bigger.  We haven't stayed in Kitty Hawk, but usually drive out there one day for shopping / dinner.  Good luck!
