After ACL Surgery, Keeping him quiet

Ok, so my pooch had ACL surgery on Friday.  He seems to not even realize this.  He tries to jump on the couch, or off (we catch him before this happens), get up on his hind legs to greet people, tries to lift his good leg to pee...standing on his bad leg.  He doesn't want to lay down, he doesn't want to sleep.  I give him the pain pills, even though, I don't feel he is in pain.... just to get him to relax, and sleep for a bit, but that doesn't even help.  He still has the giant bandage on.  That comes off tomorrow, and I fear it will only get worse, once he has "full motion" of the leg.  Does anyone have ANY solutions you can think of?  He is not food oriented, so treats do nothing, nor would a puzzle ball. He isn't a chewer, so bones, antlers, bullie sticks are all out.  I play softly with him with his toys, while he is laying down, but that bores him after a while.  Oh, I should also mention, I can't leave him at all, he will just follow me.  He wasn't like that pre-surgery, but he is now.  I still have 3 months of this, I don't know what to do!  Should I just buy a case or 2 of duct tape?  Ugh....... TIA for any suggestions!

Re: After ACL Surgery, Keeping him quiet

  • Ziva had surgery on tuesday for this too. I would stop givin him the pain pills because they mask any discomfort he might have. Have you tried doing some training of fun trucks where he doesn't have to talk around?

Ziva is a lazy lump half the time so me just sitting on the floor with her where she can sleep in my lap works for her. You unfortunately might have to do crate rest. Hopefully someone else had better suggestions!

  • Sadly, a crate isn't an option either.  He will scratch until his nails fall out... literally.  I believe he was abused in a cage before we got him.  He has real issues when closed in. :(

  • You say that he isn't food motivated, but does he like ice cubes? They aren't really food, but B enjoys licking them. Maybe freeze some in a Kong if he likes that.

  • Would an X-pen work?  It's not totally enclosed like a crate, but keeps range of motion to a minimum. That's what we used with my mom's dog, with her bed and lots of toys and treats within.

We used something like this :  http://www.amazon.com/North-States-Superyard-Play-Classic/dp/B00020L78M/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1328659620&sr=1-1

It isn't fully enclosed, so we could reach down and pet her when walking by.  She likes enclosed spaces though, because she would settle down with a blanket over it.

When you're lounging, can you tether him to you? That way you know as soon as he starts to move.

This sucks, I know.  They do feel better almost immediately.  My dog was on pain meds for only about three days.  Good luck!
