Anyone commute to Manhattan or have a spouse that does?

Hi...we're looking to move to NJ and I was wondering what the cost of a monthly bus ticket is to Manhattan? We're looking in the Manalapan/Freehold area, so we would need a price from there. Also, what are the bus options? My husband thinks it's more than just NJ Transit. TIA...

  • It is I think 500 from freehold and the bus is LONG! The train is better but more money and farther away. My BIL used to commute from there-

  • Hi, there,

I'm in Shrewsbury (a little north east of freehold).  I commute to Jersey City, my husband to Manhattan, but we both drive because we have a crazy schedule issue.

From Freehold, make sure you ask about parking for a bus first.  I was told that depending on where you are in Freehold, you may not be able to find parking near the bus stops.  The other option I know about is Academy bus lines.  I believe they stop at Red Bank (so you park in the lot right off the parkway and get the bus there) and also there's a similar option at Holmdel (PNC Bank Center lot).  It would obviously mean driving to one of those places first, but might be an option.  Finally, I work with a person who lives in Manalapan.  He drives to the Matawan train station (but again, parking an issue there).

Don't know how helpful that was but just definitely find out about parking possibilities when you consider the bus/train.  And good luck!

  • The monthly bus is $324 from Marlboro. There are some places with free parking. The train is easy for parking now too. They called us and it had been a 7 year wait list. We were only on the list 3 years. There are tons of private parking lots now with space too.

There is a tax program to lower the cost.

  • Thanks for the info!

Hi...what is this waiting list you are talking about? Is that a waiting list for parking in a lot?? =/

  • DH commutes to NYC from northern bergen county and the bus is soooooo much less expensive than the train. it is about $250 a month with free parking an the train is over $500 plus parking. DH actually likes the bus better than the train.
  • i used to commute from the aberdeen/matawan train station.  door to door it was ~1 1/2 hours.  i think i used to pay ~300 for a monthly ticket, but that was 6 years ago.  i think it has gone up a considerable amount.

regarding parking - for a spot in the train lot it is ~$400 for the year and a 5-7 year waiting list.  no - that is not a typo.

we had to get a parking spot at a business nearby and then walk to the train (only 1-2minutes to walk).  it was ~60/month.

(i used to work pretty close to penn station, so i didn't need the subway and it was only ~5-10 min to walk).

i also tried the nj transit bus for a while, but the traffic was awful.

my BIL lives in middletown and takes a ferry boat to downtown NY.  i think it is only 40min, but it is $$$ - i think over $600/month.  (not sure exactly where the boat leaves from but it must be fairly close to middletown).

    HTH.
