Thoughts on EMT course Instructor?

I'm taking an EMT course (required for the fire department here) and I'm having some trouble with the instructor.

I'm an auditory learner and there were at least half a dozen things that she stated incorrectly yesterday in our class (for those that know anatomy, she referred to the mid - axilary line as being a line that goes straight up and down dividing the body into left and right halves.  Not correct).  We're required to take a test on every chapter and several of the things she incorrectly explained were on the exam.  I was the only person who passed and there are 10 people in the course.  I only passed because this week's chapter was on anatomy, a subject I already know.

So, during the class, I started to ask her if she meant the correct answer, so that I wasn't confused.   She got kind of irritated (which I can understand to some degree)...but continued to make the same errors.

To top it off, on our 25 question test, 8 of the questions were not at EMT level (she used paramedic level questions, which is at a much higher level).  She did eventually throw those questions out...probably because I argued that it wasn't fair to expect us to know things that aren't in our book, and not in the course.

If this were a normal class, I would stop attending and simply learn from the book, but attendance is required.

We are two weeks into the class.  At this point would you say something to her (the instructor), or to her supervisor?  I'm very frustrated with how this class is being run, and she needs to get her materials and facts in line.  Thoughts?

Since attendance (and I'm assuming a passing grade) are required I would go directly to her.  Take your notes from her lecture and an anatomy book that contradicts her and ask to speak to her after class.

Try not to be too confrontational as she's already gonna be uncomfortable with you. Tell her that you'd like to earn a good grade but you're finding that challenging when the information being presented is contradictory to the anatomy you've already learned and then show her examples.

Ask her to help you understand the differences in what you've learned in the past and what she's trying to teach you now.

How are your fellow class mates responding to all of this?  I would think that someone's gonna figure something out when everyone is failing her class, right?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

I'm the only person in the class who's had even high school level anatomy, so it's all new to them.  It was our first exam, and they're all struggling with the material to begin with, so I'm not sure they really noticed that she was using the terms incorrectly (like she regularly uses aorta when she's talking about an atruim).  maybe as the class goes on, they'll notice.

But they noticed they failed, right?

Are they freaking out or is there not that much riding on this course for them?

  • Tough call - sounds like your instructor is not good at this.  Is this her full-time job?

Are the other people there your friends or just people in the class?  If they aren't people you know, I'd probably just keep passing quizzes on my own and then let her know that her class sucks during the evaluation.

Are you united with the CCOKCs?

Howdyshell- I think they figured they failed because they didn't know the material.  Not because she taught it incorrectly.

And about half are from my department (so I've known them for 6 months or so).  Maybe I'll mention something to the captain or chief and see what they suggest.

And this isn't her full time job, she's an interior decorator and she's a part time EMT at a local ski resort.  She may be a perfectly competent EMT, but just because you can do something, doesn't mean you can teach it.
