Decorating cookies

Matthew and I are baking cookies for his Valentine's Day party and he has it in his head that we should write "Happy Valentine's Day" on them. I already have a maker with edible ink, but what icing can I use that will be smooth enough to write on. I normally, use icing that wouldn't work (or just sprinkles when i'm lazy).

Re: Decorating cookies

  • You can cover them in fondant... just roll it out thin and cut it out with the same cookie cutter, stick it on with a little water and it will be nice & smooth.

Should have added fondant is out as it's rarely vegetarian and he'll want Daddy to eat them too.

  • Oh really?  I sometimes make the fondant with just marshmallows & water.  I don't think marshmallows have animal products.  Do they?

  • royal icing calls for meringue powder which has egg whites in it.  is that a no-go?

  • are you up to making your own?  you have to sub agar agar flakes for the gelatin but here's a recipe for you:

also, just for the record, i'm pretty sure marshmallow fluff doesn't have gelatin in it.  not that it has to do with this but you said marshmallow and i thought, "omg, i could totally go for some fluff right now" and there you go.

That's fine. He eats egg. I'll look for "royal icing recipe" in google :)

  • ok, so i found a recipe for marshmallow fluff fondant that looks pretty yummy but i also found out that while it doesn't contain gelatin, fluff does have dried egg whites in it.  can't you just lie to your DH?  ;)

anyway, here's the MRF recipe with fluff, in case it does fit the bill:

LOL. I have been told that. Can't get Matthew to eat rice krispie treats though so I haven't tried. Seriously what kid hates rice krispy treats? (beside my weirdo)

    4c powdered sugar.

    1/2c water

    1/4c meringue powder.

    1/2t vanilla extract

mix the MP and the water together until bubbles form, then add vanilla.  slowly add in sugar.  once combined, whip the sh!t out of it for like 5-8 minutes until it's all fluffy and pretty.

  • Royal icing is iced after they cool, right?

I swear I just wanted to do the easy method of sprinkles but when he asked to write on them and I said "can't we just do sprinkles?" he said "if we are just doing sprinkles then lets just buy them at the store". Sigh.

  • Why don't you just use the royal icing to pipe the words on and skip covering them entirely.  That eliminates a big step... They might not be as pretty as icing the entire thing, but at least they will have the words... then you can still use the sprinkles on the words before they dry.

  • yup.  i mean, if you want easy easy easy, just get some betty crocker, ice it and let it crust over, then write on it (although you have to do that REALLY lightly).  i'd never sell that but betty crocker is awesome sometimes ;)
