Need advice - loose patella

Hey everyone!  I am not on here much, but know you guys are smart!

Charlyze went to the vet Saturday and the vet mentioned she had a loose patella, or both, I wasn't there so I didn't hear her.  Charlyze is 10lbs and while she is not limping when running or anything, we have noticed her struggling to jump up on the couch and bed.  We moved into a place with hard floors and figured it was just her slipping.

What supplements are good for this?  I think glucosamine (sp?) is, but not sure on dosage.  Also, should we get her doggy stairs so she doesn't have to try to jump and slip when trying?

Thanks!

Re: Need advice - loose patella

  • My pom is somewhat prone to a luxating patella and the vet said there really wasn't much we could do about it other than keep an eye on it. I think glucosamine is really more for preventing arthritic joints.

  • You can try the joint supplements like glucosmaine/chondroitin/MSM or things like Dasuquin, but like PV said there is no guarantee it will help.  Aqua therapy can be beneficial as well as straight leashed walking to help build strength.  Fish oil and vitamin E could help too since it can act as an anti-inflammatory.

My parents dog did start limping and had surgery to correct her LP and afterwards she did great.  If you continue to notice issues, I would get her situation graded by a certified orthopedic vet specialist to see if they recommend additional treatment.
