oceanfront vacation rentals

i posted below about renting a house in outerbanks, but now my mom has changed her mind.  (there are no close airports & my brother would be flying from south florida).  (then she suggested myrtle beach, but it is a 12 hr drive + lots of stops & i'm not doing that w/2 toddlers - and airfare for 4 is too much).

she wants a 6 bedroom rental on the ocean preferrably w/a pool.  my mom, sister & I are all driving fr. NY, PA & NJ, respectively.

i suggested something closer - delaware, maryland, etc.

can you recommend a nice town - preferrably no longer than an 8 hr drive fr. NJ (less would be better) w/things to do for kids & nice beaches?

i understand that this is kind of rambling, but any input you have would be appreciated.

thanks!!

Re: oceanfront vacation rentals

  • we were going to do Virginia Beach, but figured there's no way in hell my kids will make it.  We compromised on Ocean City, Maryland.  It's a 4 hour drive. We rented a condo (one that is in a building) that has an indoor and outdoor pool. I wantedt his incase it rains. What the hell do you do with a 3 and 1 year old then..y a know? Anyway, we saved money by booking the week of June 9th rather than going in the middle of July or August.
  • We did Myrtle Beach last year with 2 teenagers and 2 toddlers (daughter 4 and son 2). We drove through the night so it was not so bad just wanted to throw that out there....
  • I posted earlier about Block Island, RI. Its 4 1/2 hours from my house in central Jersey to the ferry and then the ferry is 1 hour (which at that point you feel like you are on vacation). My SIL comes from central LI and it takes her 3 1/2 hours to the ferry (Pt. Judith). When you have kids you have to take the ferry from here b/c its the only way to get a car on the island!

When you get off the ferry its only a few minutes to get wherever you are going. The weather is warm, the water is cool and while there is not much to do in terms of rides, boardwalk, etc. it is a low-key veg out type of place. Very natural, more like bike riding, nature hikes, exploring different beaches. They have a lot of restuarants and shopping will take you about entire day to hit all the shops. We rent a 3 bed house with oceanviews and access to a rocky private beach for $3600 in late July. I've seen 6 bedroom homes listed for a weekly rental for about $5400-$7000. Check out the realtor websites on the island to see whats avaialbe. HTH and GL!
