What's your opinion on a basset hound for first time pet owner?
It would be an adult, not puppy - and every dog is different. But generalizing the breed what is your gut? I know nothing about this breed, other than it's typically vocal and has the most amazing ears

My niece (19yr old) is looking at this breed for her first solo dog.

Re: What's your opinion on a basset hound for first time pet owner?
Our first permanent is a bassett mix. Pros: they are low energy, very friendly, get along with everyone and everything. Cons: they can be hard to train including potty training, they're stubborn, they can't be off leash, and some bark A LOT.
It works for us b.c. Darwin is very easy and the occasional accident isn't a huge deal to us. We love the fact that he is so sweet, gentle and affectionate with EVERYONE, all other animals, all people including kids. The training you can get around if you reward with food more often than not and stick with a few basic commands. He has sit, look, and leave it DOWN but anything else is a crap shoot.
Depending on your personality they can be great first dogs.
I grew up with a basset hound/GSD mix. She was truly an amazing dog and I still tear up thinking about her. She was hilarious because her body was that of a GSD, but she had basset hound legs!
Like you already know, every dog is different, but our girl was so sweet and tolerant of us as kids and loved everybody.
