Canine Distemper

I don't usually post here but I am hoping someone can help...

We found out yesterday that our 7 month old puppy (Chihuahua/Cattle Dog - the pounds guess) that we adopted from the pound in December more than likely has canine distemper.

When we first adopted him the vet diagnosed him with kennel cough, so we treated that and finished the meds in early January.  Then, over the weekend he started having twitches in his jaw and above his right ear.  It was so bad one night he woke us up from the "clicking" or gum smacking noise the twitch causes him to make.  He's more clumsy and less like his usual puppy self, BUT he is still eating and drinking and has no diarrhea.

Has anyone here dealt with distemper before? If so, any advice?

I'm trying really hard not to give up hope because he is such a little fighter and the vet still thinks there is a chance he could pull through, but I?m worried.  I am making myself sick researching everything on google so any help would be greatly appreciated.  TYIA.

Re: Canine Distemper

  • I know people who's dogs have pulled through with heavy homeopathic treatment. I know people who lost a dog a b/tch and a litter of puppies after the dog picked it up at the vets office.
  • My 11 year old lab had it as a puppy. The vet diagnosed it right away and she was on antibiotics for what seemed like months. She was lethargic, constantly had a runny nose, and coughed (from what I remember). The meds seemed to help but her symptoms continued for like 4 months and then one day she just appeared better. She is a crazy senior dog now. When we go to the park most people ask how old our "puppy" is. I know that mine is a happy story that many don't have, but I wanted you to have some hope. Good luck.

Thank you so much for sharing your story!  Like I said, he is a fighter so I still have hope, but I just want to have some idea of what I am in for.

Last night when I got home from work he was probably the worst I have seen him yet, his head was like a bobble head and he couldn't steady it.  But after he ate (which he still has a fantastic appetite) he seemed to be better.  I don't know whether to take that as a good sign or not, but I am going to take it one day at a time.  I also purchased some PetAlive Vi-Pro Plus from Amazon so I am going to try that once it arrives. Thanks again.
