Can I get your photo opinion?

So, this photo got rejected from TS and FG for lighting issues.  I can handle the rejection; I know they are so subjective anyway.  What I'm wondering is if my screen or eyes are off?  Does the lighting look okay to you all?  Any suggestions?  Please be honest, I'm asking because I really want to know.

Re: Can I get your photo opinion?

  • It looks perfectly fine to me (and is a great pic, IMO).
  • I think it is a lovely picture. I'm not really seeing the lighting issue. Of course, that certainly isn't my strength either.

side note- I'm looking forward to trying it!

  • Hi Kelsey!

My photos get rejected all the time, but I am still new at food photography. When I look at TS or FG, I notice that their photos almost all have a LOT of light - whether natural or staged. Sometimes you can fix this on picnik by adding more highlights to brighten up the photo.

My guess is that is why your photo was declined.  It looks like the bottle in the upper right-hand corner is also a bit dark.  Maybe play with the lighting settings in your editing software to see if that does the trick?

I agree. It doesn't look over-exposed which tends to be what TS/FG seem to lean towards. Lovely photo, however...I agree!

  • Thanks, ladies!  I knew I could count on you.  I definitely see that TS and FG tend to like very light/bright pictures.  I was a bit concerned about the bottle being dark, but it is actually cut out of the crops for the sites.  I didn't want to expose it too much because it was getting grainy looking.

Oh well!  I'm proud of the picture and, if you all like it, I'm going to stay proud Smile  Maybe I'll lighten it some and resubmit just to see what happens.  Thanks again!

  • I think it's a great photo, I especially love how you added the newspaper.

I'm not good at lighting myself, however, I notice that the photos they accept seem to have a lot of lighting/are much brighter, so maybe that is the issue.

  • I think it is a great picture!! I love the props you used: the spoons, the paper, the bottle and the red tray. I really don't see any problem with the lighting.  And, they look super delicious:D

  • To me it looks like your main source of light is behind the food set up and not coming from the side you are on....causing shading/dark shadows.
Was this picture taken with a flash/speedlight?

  • To me, the lighting looks a tad flat, but it's still well balanced, and worthy of either of those sites.  I've stopped trying to figure out which of my photos are going to get accepted to TS and FG anymore.  It's so random.
  • I think it is a great photo as well. I submitted yesterday to FG and got a rejection for my soup for it being underexposed. I fixed it, resubmitted, and actually thought it was overexposed, but they accepted it. I would say make a tweak and resubmit :)

As for TS, I have completely given up on them for their little to no constructive criticism that I get.

  • I think the composition is great. Just tweak the lighting a little and resubmit. Heck, sometimes if I think the lighting is spot on, I wont touch a thing and resubmit and they accept :P Just depends who is looking at it and what their mood is.
  • I was seeing reflection of your ceiling lights in the glass.  The spoons have a really blown out hot-spot from the overhead lights.

Try it again with just natural light.  Find your window that gets lots of morning light (not sun, just light) and don't use flash.  I'd set the glass on top of the napkin (but still show the tray) and set the spoons closer to the glass so the spoons will reflect the grapefruit color.  Set it up so that you stand between the window and the subject, then move a step to your right so you are not creating a shaddow on it and the light looks like it is from a slight angle.  So the light is coming in over your left shoulder. How about a lighter bottle.  I'm not sure what you have there, but a lighter bottle with white wine or whatever will pickup more light to brighten that corner.

If you want, I can pm you in the morning with an example of what I'm trying to say.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, ladies.  I actually did shoot this with natural light and a white board to bounce it.  I do have a tough time with light because we only have our sliding glass door downstairs.  (Hooray townhome living!)  This time of year, I don't get much great light from it.

I'll work on the editing and see if I can get it accepted.  I'll let you know how it goes!
