Cat Bullying His Brother

Ferris (18 month old cat) has been bullying his littermate (elliot) for about the last 6-12 months. We've had a feliway diffuser since we first brought them home as a foster litter. We added a large, pretty awesome, cat tree in November. They are raw fed, played with, and given quite a bit of attention every day. I've tried Rescue Remedy and shaking a can with pennies (it scares Elliot and doesn't really phase Ferris). Ferris primarily does this to Elliot, because Olive and Everest will tell him to knock it off. Ferris will stalk or follow Elliot, and then pounce on him and bite him. He doesn't break skin, but Elliot whines and doesn't fight back. Elliot is much more of a timid cat, whereas, Ferris is very extroverted.

No animals have been added in that time except for Olive(our feral), and the bullying started before her.

They have the entire garage as cat central, with couches and toys, and their cat condo is in the living room where they all like to hang out. They also have a smaller cat post in the dining room.

Is there something I'm missing, or should I be looking into Prozac for one or both of them?

I'm leaving or work, but will check back in when I get settled.

Re: Cat Bullying His Brother

  • For me, it would depend on the extent of the bullying. Does Elliot seem okay otherwise? Act pretty normal? No wounds?

My two cats come from the same litter, and the alpha kitty has been harassing her sister for nearly 14 years now. On days she gets too rough (or annoying), I break up their chases and fights. Of course, sometimes the runt actively hisses at and eggs the alpha on until they do fight. You might be surprised to find that they both like the status quo.

  • No wounds, but Elliot will get really scared and try to actively get away from his brother. He doesn't openly provoke Ferris, either.

Elliot is a really timid cat, and will hide for a while after Ferris has chased and pinned him.

  • Have you tried a squirt bottle?

I was reading up on this last week due to some aggression against our dog and it seems that cats really like to pick on other animals if they perform as "victims" - running away, cowering, etc.  So I started spraying Hobbes and Cat when they were picking on Dot actively or getting ready to do so.  The bullying has completely stopped.  In less than a week.

  • A squirt bottle is the only thing I haven't tried yet. I tried pennies in a can, which just scared Elliot and didn't deter Ferris in the slightest. I'll try the water bottle this week.

  • Have you checked Cat vs Cat? I loaned my copy to a neighbor but it really has a lot of good information about multi-cat households and how to read cat behavior.  I know we were misinterpreting things that were going on in our house.

I'm adding a copy to my cart on Amazon when I order our Feliway refills tonight. YGPM.
