Anyone been to St. Croix?

This island is on the top of my list for our vacation next summer.  Anyone been?  Would it be a good place for three kids ages 7, 4, and 18 months?  Where is a good place to stay (we are not big city people at all)?  Any other ideas for a beachy vacation in the US or caribbean (not Hawaii or Puerto Rico and not willing to do Central America at this point with the kids so young)?

Re: Anyone been to St. Croix?

  • When I was 12... all I know is that the hotel we stayed at was destroyed in a hurricane a few years later.

But it was a super beautiful place!

  • xh and I went for a week about 10yrs ago.  We dove daily and it was gorgeous, it's the only place I've seen a live seahorse outside a zoo/aquaruim. It was Sunterra Resorts Carambola Beach.  We rented a car and went all over the island.  I would take kids there.

So the diving is good then?   DH will definitely want to dive. The girls and I will want to snorkel.

  • Yes we loved it, it was shore diving though and kicked our assessss the first day.  You have to literally swim 50yds out and then swim under water for a bit before you decend.  Nothing like the drift diving in Cozumel if he's done that (where the boat drops you off and the drift just carries you along at a nice slow pace and meets you at the pick up.)  I think we dove 2-3 times a day for four days of our trip.
