This needs to stop; News Media

I just read a headline on AOL that I won't even share here. It's about the Powell case and I'm literally sick to my stomach.

This country, our world, is sick. We are a sick sick society that we need details into catastrophic, heart wrenching, seriously disturbing acts that happen to innocent people. I really want to do something to work towards an end of this. This is not news, it's sensationalism. The piece of information I just read DID NOT need to be made public. Nothing good comes of it. NOTHING.

I'm so disturbed right now, I can't even focus.

Re: This needs to stop; News Media

  • CNN's main home page had a picture of a dead 3 year old in Syria as the main photo. Yes, that is news worthy, but it didn't really need to be the main image for the site. I didn't feel it was all that respectful to use his image to get the point across either.
  • I totally agree. To me, about 90% of local news broadcasting is like this. I can't watch it.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • this is why i listen to NPR.  i get actual news without any of the karsashian crap.  and after the first day, not one word about the powell case.

  • I just read about the 15 year old girl who killed a 9 year old girl so she knew what it felt like.  I feel like I could hurl now.
Where in world would you like me to ship you? image My boys - I am so screwed in about 7 years. What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? LIPSTICK !
  • If the only news worth publishing has a prerequisite that "good" come of it, every day would be a slow news day.

Call me crazy, but I think freedom of the press is a perk of being an American -- not something we should work toward stopping. That's what China's for.

Remember that she was deeply disturbed. Her father is in jail and her mother is an addict. She had tried to commit suicide more than once. She was a cutter and she was on antidepressants.  Not that that mitigates this horrific murder  but it is not like her actions came from nowhere.

  • So stop watching.  There's never anything positive in the news and if it is, its just a blurb at the end of the broadcast... You want to know about the stock market, check the stocks... you want to know about sports, check espn... weather, check the weather channel.... same with politics, etc.... stop watching the mainstream news they always report on the murders and rapes first.

  • I'm not saying we stop delivering bad news, I'm saying sensationalizing news stories with images of dead 3 year old's, headlines of people hearing the cry's of 2 little boys whose father is about to blow them, or other things in that vain are not necessary to get the point of the story across.

No one can help those 2 little boys now. What good comes of the entire world knowing that at the end of their lives they were terrified and no one could help them?

I could go on and on with examples of what I'm talking about. Using the pain and suffering of a family, of a victim should not be the way that news outlets get their point across.

  • To clarify....this was a headline on AOL's homepage. An 8 year old could see it. I just don't see the need to release detailed, personal information about horrific acts that don't actually provide any clarity into stopping or preventing these things.

If you were the aunt of those boys, would you want to click on AOL and see that? If you were the cousin of that 3 ear old in Syria would you want to know they were on CNN for the whole world to see??

Read that last night.  Bad thing to do in bed on my iPad. Couldn't fall asleep.

  • Turtle, the people in Syria are begging the world to see this stuff and take action. I doubt that kid's cousin is even still alive, let alone offended by the image.

And to your other point re: the Powell kids, I totally get what you're saying. But on the flip side, isn't there a chance that someone reading this might now think differently if they're in a similar situation, where they smell gas and crying children in the house of someone who makes you afraid for their lives, that instead of staying on the phone with a dispatcher for a few minutes, they'd scream for help from neighbors and break down every door and window in that house to try to save them?

That's my issue. I went to read a story about election news and instead saw a child the same as my son dead in his dad's arms. So, to whoever said "stop reading", do you think we should all just decide not to read stories about anything, stop being well-informed because news outlets can't be more thoughtful about the images they show?

In a much more gruesome example, people were pissed when the headlines showed the results of the olympic games before they aired here. So news outlets started hiding the results so that you had to search for them. Apparently sports fans get more respect then the families of crime victims...

  • While I agree that we should always have the freedom to say what we want, I also agree that our news is not what it once was.  There are only a few outlets that stick to the facts and avoid sensationalism.

I have had a family member in the news.. I felt that the stories that were public did not represent the truth.  I can only imagine how people close to this story would feel seeing this.  I don't want my news to be white-washed, but I do think there should be some humanity in reporting as well.

NPR /WNYC is the best for real news.

  • i think there's a happy medium between a chinese lockdown and "if it bleeds, it leads" news reporting.  it shouldn't be all or nothing.

hell, even on P&CE we have a *warning, disturbing pictures inside* standard.  it's not that hard and frankly i'm disappointed in CNN for not doing that.  it's what they usually do, why not there?

    THIS is exactly my point.

There are PEOPLE on the other side of that news headline. REAL LIVE PEOPLE who are dealing with the aftermath of whatever the story is. Are you going to tell them to stop reading the news? Stop going on the internet? Stop checking their Email? I mean, if I read through an email and then close it, news headlines pop up at the bottom of the screen. That story, those words, telling everyone on earth that those boys were crying for their lives is right there for Everyone to see. What can I do about that? I can't save them from their father? I can't go back in time and make the court see what everyone else did? I can't do a damn thing but read about how that monster brutally murdered them? How does that help anyone in that story???? How does that stop it from happening again??? Sensationalising the brutal murder of two innocent boys is NOT NEWS.

I agree with this. It's one thing to want to read a news story and stay well-informed, but it's quite another to open your browser to extremely disturbing images on a regular basis.
