I was thinking about steak but man do I suck at cooking! what's a good cut with not too much fat? and how the hell do I cook it? what's cooking time for a medium or mid rare steak? what wine goes good with steak? I'm so clueless please help me!

Re: who knows how to cook steak?

  • Filet Mignon is the leanest, cook it 6 to 8 mins per side.

NY Strip or TBone is my H's favorite, because they are thicker.  Those cook in 10 or 12 mins per side.

We grill, since it is usually grilling weather here.   You can broil in the oven if you don't have a grill.

Red wine goes with steak, the drier the better.  I suggest the Penfold's Koonunga Hill Shiraz/Cabernet blend for a nice affordable wine.

  • Sounds like a wonderful evening!

I am no good at picking them out (my husband does that) but I can give some pointers on cooking it.

If you have a broiler pan, that works the best. I usually marinade the steaks in garlic, onion, and A1 sauce for about an hour in the fridge.

Then I broil on HI on the bottom rack of the oven for 14 minutes, flipping once at 7 minutes. That usually gets a good medium rare cook. The top should be a dark brown, but not black.

As for wine, a good cabernet sauvignon (red) would be my favorite pairing. Pepperwood Grove (CA) is one of my less expensive go to's.

I definitely say give it a try! The only way you can really learn to cook is to experiment!!

  • Whatever you do, don't boil it. It turns green. Ick!

hahaha, I would never have thought to do that.  Maybe sautee on the stove, but boil?   That's only for livers and gizzards for the dog's food.   They eat anything.

I forgot about marinades and seasonings, but those are so subjective.  Everyone likes something different when it comes to those, but Stubbs BBQ is one of my favorite brands for steak sauce or spice.    Of course if a good steak is cooked properly, you shouldn't need any sauce. <----   (this is a reocurring argument in our house, H says he needs the sauce no matter what, even if the steak is perfect)

In my defense I told MH I couldn't cook before we dating/lived together/married. This "common sense" for cooking does not compute in my head.

  • I measure how done a steak is by touch--

ETA: I always put a big pat of butter on top of the steak before broiling (this is the secret to Ruth's Chris!)

  • A good Chianti (a slightly drier red) is also wonderful with a good steak.
