Hello,
My DH is transferring from the Air Force to the Coast Guard and I just wanted some info about it and what to expect as a wife. He is planning on being a Boatswain's Mate, is there any different risks to this job as to other jobs?
What should I be expecting for life now?
Thanks!
Re: Coast Guard Wives
We really like the Coast Guard life. I'm guessing that it'll be fairly similar to what you've already experienced as an AF wife, but with some tweaks. Some major differences are:
- deployments - we don't usually have super long ones (though one ship just returned from 254 days out of port), but it's a bunch of shorter times. Some ships are underway for a week or two at a time, but they're gone 2/4 weeks of the month. Other ships are underway for 3 months at a time, and they're out for 3 months, home for 2-3... it just depends. It usually isn't much longer than 3 months at a time (unless he's on an icebreaker). The stinky thing about short deployments are that you barely get into a routine and then he's back, you just get into a routine together, then he's gone again.
- bases - we don't have many bases. Some ships are in the middle of nowhere and we have no base support (ie no commissary, exchanges). There usually are housing options, and sometimes if a Navy, AF, or MC base is nearby you can go to those. We often just opt for our BAH and live on the economy.
I guess those are the two major ones that are sticking out in my mind right now, but for more opinions and answers, check out coastiechicks.net - they have good CG forums there.
Welcome to the CG

I thought the CG was on a freeze? H deeply looked into transferring from AF to CG and they told him that there was no chance.
*shrugs*
I have no clue, all I know is that the Coast Guard has signed off on it and we are just waiting for the Air Force to agree with it.
BMs aren't really any riskier than any other rate, but of course it depends on where he goes. The only other difference I would say is the USCG is small, but sometimes I like that aspect of it.
Do you know if he's getting direct to A school? My H said he thought the wait was 12-18 months if he was transferring as a non-rate. That would be something to consider.
I am pretty sure that my husband is going to hopefully do the striker program and he's going in as an E3.
I prefer the small aspect, makes things a little more drama free (hopefully)
Thanks ladies!
