What has changed in 30 years....(s/o of the allergy cheerio post)

Is it that there are so many more kids that are allergic to stuff ( and if so, how?) or we just didn't know about it b/c we didn't have the media we do today?  The stuff we used to bring in to school or eat at a party.....there were never ANY restrictions at all.
Don't want a debate I'm just wondering if there is an actual answer.  Peanut allergies are scary.  When I worked at Friendly's years ago, a little girl started wheezing b/c she was sitting across from someone eating a PB cup sundae.  How does that happen?  I HATE PB and when I ask if something has nuts they ask if I'm allergic.  No....I just hate them.  It was all anyone ate when I grew up.

  • I am NO expert, of course, but my personal theory is that there are just so many toxins around us that didn't exist 30 years ago.

  • When I was pregnant I asked my cousin this same question.  She's been a school psychologist for 35 yrs & she said that kids today are way different then 30 years ago.  So many allergies, more behavioral disorders , etc.  She believes it has to do with the environment, toxins, more hormones in foods, etc...  I don't know, it's kinda crazy... I don't remember so many restrictions either.  I used to bring pb&j for lunch every other day, never an issue... We're talking 25-30 yrs ago though.

Agreed. I didn't know any kids with allergies growing up. Now, it's everywhere. Our nephew has a tree nut and peanut allergy andit is SCARY, I'm terrified whenever he comes to visit. I also think that not all allergies are true allergies but are labeled as such as a precaution. There are so many degrees to it all.

  • From what I understand there are researchers all over the country trying to figure out why allergy incidence is so much higher. There are a few theories floating around, including far more toxins in the environment leading to it, others are looking at the fact that children spend far less time outside and are living in a more sterile environment and that has basically caused immune systems to go into overdrive and attack things that were previously fine in the absence of genuine threats. Hopefully someone will figure out what is going on so we can remedy  it!

  • Not based on allergies, but a public school that I used to work in (about 2 years ago) has a rule that nothing homemade is allowed to be brought in for parties, birthdays, etc. If you wanted to bring in cupcakes for a party, they must be store bought, from an approved vendor, and have the receipt attached. No exceptions and I've seen parents being turned away with homemade cupcakes for their LO's bday party or who forgot the receipt. It had to do with homeland security and you never known what's being put into those homemade cupcakes. Plus they district said unofficially it was also about you never know how clean someones kitchen really is.
  • I know when I was 8 years old ( I'll be 50 this year) we had a new neighbor move in and She ( the Mom) was hifghly allergic to peanuts. Once I was older around 12 and started babysitting for them I understood what they went thru. They could not have any peanut products in the house. She would give me money to go to store and buy a jar of peanut butter and make sandwiches for the kids on the back deck using plastic silverware and paper plates. After the kids were done they had to change clothes and I had to throw everything clothes and towels they used to clean up into washing machine before their Mom got home.

  • I too have been asking myself the same question lately too!!!! it's definitely environmental!!! Maybe even something to do with vaccinations which when I was a kid I got less of....now these days my kids have gotten more than triple the amount I got back in the day!

It must be tied in somehow to why 8 and 9 year old girls are getting AF and growing boobs too.  Has to be environmental....all environmental.  This world we will in is doing us all in.

that REEKS of collusion. i'm sure whomever wrote up that rule's BIL owned the bakery where the parents had to buy the cupcakes.

and honestly, the "homeland security" angle is the biggest load of BS i've ever heard in my entire life.  i deal with government agencies who have to deploy HLS on a regular basis and it has nothing to do with birthday cupcakes.  HLS doesn't give a crap about a kindergarten class, they're worried about people blowing up subway lines.

I don't know - I don't really think vaccines have anything to do with it, however I do think that young girls "maturing" so quickly has to do with the increase in hormones in meat and dairy.  Maybe the added antibiotics that pregnant moms are/were ingesting in their foods contribute to the allergies also.

  • The same thing for Special Education...when you were in school, did you even know of any "classified" children?  The environment, toxins, etc. are all out of control and messing with everything.  Allergies, deficits, disabilities, I believe it all has to to do with the messing with things in the environment and all the man-made things that we consume these days.  I'm going back to being a caveman/woman :)

There were no small bakeries or shops on the list. It was mostly Shoprite, BJ's, Costco, big super stores.
And while I agree that calling it homeland security is a bunch of BS, I think they were more afraid of crazy parents and not terrorists.

  • Sorry my last sentence was supposed to be "this world we live in is doing us all in".

  • I am not really sure but I am a mother of a child who has diary allergy and NO ONE in my family or DH every had this problem. One thing I do know on top of having this allergy Brady has metabolic disorder that he can not process any kind of animal protein. When I was at the school signing up the twins for preschool and asked about how they would handle this next year with Brady. They told me they would label has an allergy (protein problem) because that was the easiest way to get everyone to understand.

  • I too have read about the theory that kids today are too "clean" - and therefore their immune systems pick something else to fight.  Interesting.  I think it was the same article that said that there is a higher instance of allergies in kids who were born via c-section, the theory being that they were not exposed to all of the bacteria, etc. in teh birht canal....

hope they can find a definitive answer soon.
