Nervous about having to board dogs for extended period
DH and I are going to Italy/Spain with my parents for 10 days at the end of May. We have 2 labs that my inlaws usually watch when we go on long trips, but we just found out they will not be able to watch the dogs this May, so now we are trying to think of what to do. (I'm sad they won't be able to watch the dogs because the inlaws love having the dogs there). We have boarded them at a local doggie day care when we were gone for just a long weekend, but it breaks my heart to think of boarding them for 10 days. We don't have any other friends or family in the area that could stay at our house, or that we could take the dogs to, so it seems our options are boarding, or hiring a stranger to stay at the house (which DH has already said he doesn't feel comfortable with, but I might have to work on that). Has anyone here boarded their dog for as long as 10 days, and was the experience ok for your dog? The place they would be at is fantastic as far as doggie day care goes - they get to play with other dogs all day long, get 3-4 walks per day, there is always people there interacting with the dogs, etc. - so I have no problem with the place we would board them at, I've just never had to face the thought of them at a strange place with so many other dogs for so long. Any advice or kind words that they would be fine for that long would be appreciated.
Re: Nervous about having to board dogs for extended period
One of the board regulars is going to Europe with her H and has to board her dog for most of the trip, too. It'll be like a vacation for your dogs while you're on vacation! Just think of them getting to play with other dogs every single day.
They'll be in good hands, and you'll all have a happy reunion when you get back. They'll also likely be pretty wiped out for a few days afterward from playing hard every day!

Well, unforunately no, our ILs are the ones who usually watch the dogs but that is completely out of the question this time, and my immediate family (my parents, my brother and his wife) will all be on the trip with us so they are out. We have no friends that would even watch the dogs for a short amount of time. I'm sure the dogs would be fine at the boarder, I just like to worry about them way too much.

We've boarded Dot for an extended period of time and she loved it - she got to play with all the other dogs plus there was plenty of yard-sniffing to do. We'll be boarding her again in March-April when we fly back east to close our house and visit our parents, at least 10 days. As long as you're confident in the boarding place, I'm sure theyll love the change in routine. Does your boarding facility has webcams so you can watch them playing? I really like that feature of our facility.
Just be prepared for them to come home exhausted and sleep for several days.
I came here to ask this same question!! We are making a trip home for 3 weeks in July and I'm so nervous to leave our dog. We adopted him, so I'm worried he will think we abandoned him or something. And he doesn't get along with other dogs, so we won't be able to leave him in a doggie daycare type place. He had separation anxiety when we moved him cross country, so I assume we'll be back at square one when we return. And we have no one to watch him either, no family here. But I'm reassured that others have to leave their pets for a long time too and everything was fine!
