S/O Death post - Heaven and kids clicky poll

If you tell kids that people die and go to heaven are you saying that because it is part of your beliefs or to make them feel better?[Poll]

  • For what it is worth, I am firmly against "heaving" kids.  ;)

  • We aren't really sure what we believe but heaven has come up because of other friends who have lost pets or family members and have explained it to their kids who then tell mine. Or some people have just said to my kids," oh yes Logan is in heaven now.." without really discussing it with us. Ah well....we just say its where some people believe people go when they die. Honestly, where they go hasn't been a huge issue...yet. But our dog was really our first loss with the kids and they weren't that connected to her.

  • LOL, K!  I just tried to fix it, but it didn't seem to change for me.  LOL

it changed - now I just look crazy to all who read after.  (Oh well, everyone around here knows that about me already, so no biggie.)

This is where we've run into it also.  I'm a former Catholic, so I'm okay explaining that some other people have other beliefs that we respect, but it still keeps coming up since we are around my parents more who are regular church goers and "Children of God" (according to my DS#1).

It's soemtimes hard to raise a kid who is respectful of other's religious views and doesn't argue back with their cousin with comments like "No, [a dog] is not in heaven b/c that is only your idea not a real place."  I don't want my kid making another kid question their beliefs - at least not before that other child gets to learn more about theirs and has a little more life under their belt.

Hmmm...if Coop starts crawling and Potter is traumatized, maybe you'll believe in a good kid "heave" then.  Wink

  • We always talk about heaven as in "stars of heaven".  We are not religious at all, but we both grew up going to church so we have some christian tendencies.  When I was kid and my g-gma passed, my gma pointed out a star and said that g-gma was there looking out for me.  So, the stars are the special people in our lives that have passed.

I like this idea as stars being reminders of people who've passed into the heavens.  Thanks.

Where you go after you die hasn't come up yet but pretty much all of this.

I'm struggling to figure out how to explain religious beliefs  without being in any way negative towards any beliefs that don't harm others.  I want B. to eventually make up his own mind even if he doesn't reach the same conclusions I have.  For some reason it feels negative to say "some people believe  xyz but I don't"   Maybe it's not negative.  IDK.  It hasn't come up but  know it will.  When the IL's pray before eating etc. I just sit there silently and B. hasn't started asking questions about the differences yet.

If you watch Lion King, Mufasa tells Simba basically this same thing.

Not that I've watched it 139 times in the past week or anything.
