I found the interview with the white house intern that slept with JFK to be a little disturbing. There was no apology for sleeping with a married man (though it sounded like it was his idea...but it takes two to tango). Also, there was absolutely a hint of "poor me". I realize those were different times, but these days, 19 is actually on the older side to lose one's virginity. The interview bugged me for these reasons, and also that she's making money on it now. The only person who stands to be hurt now is Caroline Kennedy whom I'm sure is well aware of her father's infidelity. I just don't think we as a society should reward people for these decisions.
Anyone else have anything to share?
Re: For those that watched the today show this morning...
I didn't see it today, but I saw an interview on Rock Center last night and I really don't think it changed my view of JFK at all. It fit with how I looked at him before and made him more fallible and I don't judge Mimi Alford at all for coming forward now.
[Warming: I also just watched "The Purity Myth" last night so I'm a little jaded and on a feminist roll. Good documentary BTW - especially for anyone who has daughters or wants to raise feminist sons.]
Why should Mimi apologize to Caroline Kennedy? If your dad slept with someone whom he was a superior/had power over and you didn't find out until after he was dead, would it matter to you, really? I don't define people by who they slept with. I sort of hate that I couldn't turn off the interview last night b/c it shouldn't be such big news, but it's an ugly part of our culture to find fault in women for being sexual and turn around and sexualize so much in advertising and how women are looked at.
I don't look at Mimi as a bad person for the affair and I don't look at JFK differently. I do feel bad that Mimi was not treated with a ton of respect as a woman with JFK - more of an object. And I feel bad that men in power get away with a lot and are not as chastized for not being faithful to their wives, but neither act defines that person for me. I doubt I'll read the book, but I don't think speaking out about the affair or a book deal makes Mimi a terrible person. Plus it was the 60's and I think even now, I don't fully understand the lack of stigma around sex at that time.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
I didn't hint that she should. I was just saying that she's the only one in that family that is still alive and it's probably not that shocking to her. What I meant was that at least this didn't come out while Jackie was alive. I think it's one thing to know that something happened without being able to link it directly to a "tell all" book.
I think part of my problem is that I don't understand how anyone could sleep with a married man/woman (when the person knows he's/she's married). It's just something I can't wrap my head around.
I didn't see it, so I only have what I've read thus far in articles.
She absolutely owns part of this for always having the option of saying, "No, Mr. President."
However... 19 is still an incredibly naive age, and imagine being swept into the world of the White House and being personally approached and manipulated by the man who turns out to be one of our nation's most popular and well-liked presidents in history. Plus she was interning and knew she was beginning her career direction, and I imagine the pressure of wondering if that would all come to a screeching halt were she to utter the word, "No" was a deterrent. Not like the women's movement and sexual harassment was taken uber seriously back then.
I think he's the total douche in this situation. I raise my eyebrow at her, but I don't know that I judge her too harshly for all that's going down now. Again, didn't see her in person or how she conducted herself.
And adulterers suck, whether they are the mistress or the married person. But I'd also venture that any human being is capable of absolutely any set of actions given the right set of circumstances - it's not like most people wake up in the morning and say, "Know what, I'm going to go out and start an affair with a married person!"
I haven't read or seen anything about this other than the promo commercials, but I agree with this. I don't understand why she is coming out about this.
