NCR: Anyone been to the Bahamas?
DH and I are thinking of planning a trip and were thinking of Atlantis? Anyone been and if so, would you go back?
If not, any place else you recommend? Thanks ladies.
Re: NCR: Anyone been to the Bahamas?
BF and I are spending a week in Nassau in April!
26summer, do you have any recommendations for restaurants or things to do while there?
yes. i have stayed at atlantis. in my opionion-it's teeming with kids, cruise shippers and is outrageously over priced. I dont mind paying good money for food/drinks/rooms but to me this felt like a 3.5 start resort charging 5 star prices.
you can do better.
what is it you're looking for? i've been to a ton of islands.
See I went to Nassau on a cruise and hated it. It was such a tourist trap.
We stayed at Atlantis two years ago and NO, I would not go back. While the hotel was nice, it was just way overcrowded and overpriced. I don't mind spending $$$ on vacations but it has to be for something good. I do not think Atlantis is worth the money. Plus, I felt like I was just at some resort - when at the resort you have no idea you are in the Bahamas - no culture or feel of the island, if that makes sense. I like to go somewhere to experience all it has to offer, not just to stay at a nice resort.
And yes, we did get out. Downtown Nassau is nothing special at all.
My favorite island vacation is St John!

Great info, thanks! We are looking for really good food and drinks, beach ad maybe some sea fishing. We usually just relax on the beach when we are on vacation, but would love to try some excursions this time.
look into cancun, playa del carmen and tulum in mexico. the fishing's awesome and there's TONS of excursions to ruins, jungles, literally hundreds. i suggested staying in (or as near as possible) to the large towns so that if you want it's a fast cab ride in for dinner or shopping or just looking around. beaches in the area can't be beat. most resorts outside of the towns are all inclusives because there's nothing else around but int he towns there's also non-AIs.
st kitts and st martin would also be great options for you.
have fun!
Atlantis is pretty incredible... DH and I took our first vacation together there. It used to be that the facilities were only for hotel guests, but now they've implemented a day pass option for cruise ships, so yes, it gets very crowded.
If you do want to experience all that Atlantis has to offer without the ginormous price tag, stay at the Comfort Suites. It's directly across the street from Atlantis and they have exchange privileges with the resort so you can use all of the facilities for free.
We also really love Cancun.

In 1998, my family booked an Apple Vacations vacation to Paradise Island. We stayed at a Comfort Suites, right across the street from Atlantis (which was brand-new then), and as part of our package, we got to use Atlantis' pool, beach, and other attractions. We had a fantastic time.
We tried to go back when our cruise stopped there in 2001, but what they were charging was ridiculous.
We stopped in Nassau and in Cozumel while on cruises, and we enjoyed both, although I think that if we were going on a full vacation, we would avoid both for reasons listed above -- being extremely touristy and not getting a good feel of the native culture while we're there.
I hesitate to suggest going to anyplace in Mexico at the moment, even relatively touristy areas like Cancun, due to the rising levels of violence down there. The State Department just upgraded the travel warning for the country about four hours ago: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/us-updates-travel-warning-for-mexico/2012/02/09/gIQAwdGR2Q_story.html

"Where to go? Much of the Yucatan Peninsula is free of murder and mayhem. No advisory is in effect for the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Good to go, too, are the popular art and food destinations of Oaxaca and Puebla." yucatan and quintana roo are the states i mentioned. i'veb een every december for the last 9 years without a hint of incident. please dont post things like that making it seem worse than it is or without understanding what you're posting (which it seems like). you wouldn't not visit NY because of violence in LA would you? same thing.
and the pic in that article-i saw those guys outside of the UN enviornmental conference in 2010. the pic is meant to scare. dont let it. those guys are all over the place down there.
We went to Sandals Royal Bahamian for our HM in 2006 and loved it so much. It was perfect! The entertainment could have been a bit better in the evening, but that wasnt a deal breaker for us.
Great location. We took the bus to the Straw Market 2 days I think and a cab to the casino one night which was alot of fun.
We also did a few excursions - swam with the dolphins one afternoon and went para-sailing too right from the resort. So much fun!
We took a cab to Atlantis and besides being really expensive, it was all kids. I cant imagine it would be relaxing staying there if thats the kind of trip you are looking for. But it was cool. I'd recommend going there for the day to explore, maybe dinner and casino at night.
