rec for a vacum cleaner

I need a new vacum cleaner and wanted some recommendations before I purchased one. Also, are there any that you recommend I NOT get?  TIA

Re: rec for a vacum cleaner

  • It's pretty pricey but I definitely recommend the Dyson Animal Ball. We got one as a christmas gift from his parents, I'm not the person that spends $500 on a vacuum, but if you have some extra money lying around from tax returns or whatnot... ho-ly-cow is it amazing. I thought I was doing a great job vacuuming with our old vacuum but all it took was one cleaning session with the Dyson to convert me. We have two cats and the amount of fur that was hanging around that I literally had NO IDEA about was disgusting. I filled the canister in 2 minutes. Plus they sell a lot of really cool looking attachments (none of which I have, unfortunately.)
  • Ditto pp.  Dyson Animal.

It's worked great for us since we've had it. We don't have pets, and we live in a small apartment, so there's not a lot to vacuum.  It is bag less, which I LOVE. It also has a thing that tells you when the filter needs cleaned. And it has an automatic cord rewind.

We have this one and I love it.  I know it's crazy cheap, but it picked up tons of stuff our old vac left behind.  We live in a pet-free condo, so it may be different if you have a large home and pet hair to deal with.

I have the Shark Navigator and I love it (well as much as one can LOVE their vacuum cleaner). Before the Shark I had a Kirby, and while it worked, it was a pain in the butt (heavy, not user friendly for using the hose vs. the regular head, changing the bag, etc.).  The Shark is light weight, does a great job, easy to empty the canister, hose and attachments are easy and quick to use, etc.

The only thing that is a little bit of a pain, is that the air vents out the front of the machine. So if you are vacuuming on a hard surface, it will sometimes blow the dust bunnies or light dust away from you and feel like you are chasing the dust bunnies across the room. I've learned to vacuum at a slight angle on the hardwoods and it works great.

  • I just bought a Dyson Animal Ball (DC 41- the new, smaller one) last weekend and I am shocked at how disgusting our carpeting was... I got 4 canisters out of >1200 sq ft.  And vacuumed again the next day and got a little more.  And vacuumed the next day again- I just really like to vacuum now.

I bought the asthma/ allergy attachments because I have awful allergies- I'm going to vacuum my mattress this weekend.

  • I bought a Dyson ball over a year ago and was amazed at how much more it sucked up than my electrolux. I have 2 cats and a dog that shed like crazy, Dyson works wonders.
  • We have the Dyson Animal on the ball for smaller homes, I love that thing.
  • For all the people who have suggested the Dyson Animal... Does it work well on wood floors too? We're looking for a new vacuum too and have 2 dogs. With the wood floors, if I don't vacuum every 2-3 days, it starts to looking like the wild west with all the tumbleweeds  Wink
  • Dyson! It can be used on multiple surfaces (which is one of my favorite options) & they are one of the best brands on the market. Everyone I know that has one says they will never own another kind. They are so reliable & I completely love mine. Worth every single penny.

  • The first vaccum I ever had was a stick dirt devil vacuum and I liked it for a while, then I realized I needed a hose and attachments to clean certain things and then hated my little stick vacuum. I would advise a canister style vacuum with a hose and attachments to clean tricky spots, We got ours from my family which they got from sears.
