Dairy-free mommas

What are your menu's typically like? I know it sounds stupid, but I am curious since I am now having to go dairy-free. I'm breastfeeding and the Dr thinks S is lactose and milk intollerant. Any advice is welcome!

Re: Dairy-free mommas

  • We do lots of meals that are meat, veggie and salad (with a non dairy dressing). We do stirfrys, baked chicken with roasted potatoes and a veggie, etc... If you're excluding hidden dairy be sure to check all the ingredients in baked goods, breads/rolls, anything pre-made basically. There are some great vegan options at whole foods-they have great vegan chocolate chip cookies! If you like coconut earths best coconut spread is great in place of butter.

  • My DS doesn't eat any dairy, and we just eat regular stuff, I think. Recently we have had beef stew, twice baked potatoes, lasagna (he can't have that, I guess, when this happens I just make him something else), pasta, grilled chicken on a salad, enchiladas (I make one for him with no cheese inside or on top), etc.

He drinks almond, soy, rice, and flax milk. He doesn't eat that fake cheese b/c I think it's creepy, but it is available if you wanted some. No butter. One of the only things I wish he could have that he can't is yogurt, haven't found any way around that.

    Good luck.

  • Also, Kellymom has a dairy guide you can print out-it folds into a business card size and lists all of the hidden dairy to look for. I send it out with DH when he goes to the store for anything that isn't veggies or meat.

Sb&j-can he have coconut yogurt? I really like so delicious coconut yogurt in vanilla...

  • When I was eating vegan, if I needed some creaminess or richness, I would add dairy free cream cheese (available at HyVee, in the dairy section near the milk alternatives - but look closely, one is flavored) or guacamole.  You could easily do a protein, veggie and starch.  There is also dairy-free sour cream, if you wanted to do a baked potato or something (I would sneak this and some of my butter substitute into places like Famous Dave's, if I knew I was having a baked potato).

For some reason, only what I ate out is standing out to me.  I would get a burrito from places like Chipolte or Qdoba, get it without sour cream or cheese and add guacamole.  Old Chicago would let me get a calzone without cheese (and add an extra ingredient in its place!), just make sure you ask for the sauce on the side without the cheese.  Mama's Pizza has a REALLY good vegan pizza (YOU could get meat toppings), but it's only available at the Saddlecreek location.  I would make cheese-less pizza, it's not the same of course, but it's not bad.  I recommend adding extra sauce though.  :-)

  • Thankfully she didn't say anything about hidden dairy. She just said anything where the first few ingredients listed, if any of them said milk or lactose or any of the bad milk words lol.  Thanks ladies. I know it sounded dumb to ask, but honestly, I was having the worst time thinking of what I was going to be able to eat b/c I couldn't get past what I can't eat now.

  • We found out recently that Ri has a milk allergy. Its not too extreme so we have been slowly testing out certain foods to see what he can and cant have. As for substitutes we use:

    Tofutti Sour Cream

Silk Soy Milk both Regular and Vanilla

Silk Live Soy Yogurt (It comes in most of the common flavors)

Tofutti Sliced Cheese (It may be something else, I cant remember off the top of my head. Its at Hy-Vee and only comes in packs of 12 and is individually wrapped. It works because Ri loves grilled cheese sandwiches)

    Daiya Shredded Cheese

    Good luck.

The Silk Yogurt says it is dairy & lactose free. They have the nutritional info listed on the site if you want to check it out. I think I linked to it in my other post.
