If you want to use books focusing on Utopian and dystopian societies, don't forget about The Giver and Farenheit 451.  You can also use the short stories "Harrison Bergeron" by Vonnegut and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson for introduction and set purposes.

Re: ***26summer***

  • Good idea!  i love dystopian novels...I haven't read Farenheit 451 since high school but I really enjoyed it then.  I'm putting these on the list!  My librarian at school and I are trying to do a book club with the kids :-)

  • Also, if you have kids who are bit lower in reading level (4th or 5th grade), check out The City of Ember by DuPrau and The Shadow Children Series by Margaret Peterson Haddix.  The first book is called Among the Hidden.
