etiquette questions-bringing food to new mom

A friend of mine had a baby today & we had already discussed my dropping some food by her house sometime following his arrival...

Is it better to bring something that's already cooked or is it okay to bring something thats oven-ready so that they can cook it when they need it? I would assume that it would be best to bring it already cooked but the professional in me is thinking about quality & that it would taste better freshly cooked instead of re-heated...Hmm

Second question-they are vegetarians, (I live on all things pork Devil). I've got tons of ideas but would love to hear yours- any favorite vegetarian dishes?

Re: etiquette questions-bringing food to new mom

  • Definitely bring something that they can cook when they need it.  Preferably something that can be frozen in case they don't need it right when you bring it.  And if they are only two people a huge casserole dish of something is way too much and will likely go o waste.  But that's just what I've preferred.  What about a veggie pot pie?  Or vegetable soup and bread?

  • When I got meals as a new mom, almost everyone brought dishes that were casserole-like. Which was fine, and I definitely appreciated it, but I will say that the couple that were not (for example someone brought an entree salad) were highly appreciated.

Also some people brought some "extras" (salad, bread, muffins, dessert) and that was really nice.

Finally anything in a disposable or recyclable dish was something I really appreciated, to not have to worry about getting it back to the person. One gal even bought a dish at Goodwill and said that I could either keep it or donate it when I was done with it. I thought that was a nice touch. :)

Great! I was thinking of salads actually, as well as some bread & dessert. They already have an 18 month old boy so I'm also trying to make things kid-friendly. I was initially thinking of stuffed peppers but now am leaning towards cold items. I bought some disposable ziploc containers that aren't too big & are stackable. Thanks!

  • I think anyone can pop something in the oven or microwave.

I had a neighbor bring muffins, yogurt, fruit, and such in a big wrapping paper covered box. It was awesome, something to grab on the fly.

  • My all time favorite vegetarian meal is baked ziti - I do it with whole wheat pasta, spinach, and veggie crumbles (or sometimes turkey burger) - but if you're opposed to meat substitute it's just as good without it.  I also love veggie pot pie, and it's just as good without the meat.
  • Pft...  no one brought us ANYTHING!  I'd be grateful to receive any kind of food from anyone after having a baby!  I've made lasagnas for a couple of friends who've had babies since having Emma and realizing how helpful it would have been to have something in the freezer.  I cooked it beforehand...  didn't even think about just assembling and having her put it in the oven.  I always used a dish that was either a throw-away/recycle or one that I was okay not receiving back because I figured that would be helpful.

Oh, another friend just said she wanted a stuffed crust pizza so I picked up Pizza Hut on the way to her house ; )

  • My go to is quiche b/c it can be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner if need be.

Also my mom made me a big bowl of fruit salad- that was SO nice.

I also like the flexibility of quiche, and the toddler would probably eat it too (if he isn't allergic to eggs like my DD!). Maybe quiche, salad, bread and dessert?

I also loved getting cut up fruit and breakfast items that were easy to snack on.

  • If they already have kids I like to make homemade Mac&Cheese.. it's always a hit with kids and adults!

I always bring it in an aluminum tray with instructions so they can freeze it or heat it up right away.  If I know they are going to eat it that night I also bring salad, veggies and dessert.

Another favorite is enchiladas with rice, beans, salad and dessert.

  • Some things we enjoyed  were pot pies that were not cooked so we froze one.  Also a ziti ready to be baked. Salads, fruit, crackers and a big wheel of brie also were great!
  • Thanks ladies!  I always try to bring my friends something because I know how helpful that would have been after V arrived. The problem is that I'm quite choosy about food so I tend to over-analyze when I bring food to other peopleEmbarrassed
  • We were incredibly spoiled by our friends and family and I cooked a bunch before Finn arrived so we are just now starting to go grocery shopping again.

My favorite dish was a baked french toast casserole with yogurt and fresh fruit. It was awesome to have a yummy breakfast in the mornings since the majority of what we had prepped was for dinner.
