vent - daycare related

I am BEYOND irritated right now with our daycare.

Tuesday when I picked up M they mentioned that he had been pulling at his ears.  Then during the night he had a low fever of 99.4.  He does have a running nose and cough, so Wednesday I had Nick take him to the doctor.  No ear infection just a cold, so I called the daycare Wednesday afternoon just to let them know what the deal was and he would be back on Thursday.

Yesterday they called me about 11:00 and said that he had been running a low temp and they were watching it, but once it got to a certain point I would have to come get him.  About noon they called and said his temp was 101 so I had to come get him.

Get there pick him up, bring him home.  I was going to give him some Tylenol because of the fever, but I thought I wanted to check his temp again.  Took his temp it was 98.7 Indifferent I had taken it will our thermometer that you put in his ear, so just wanting to double check I got our old school thermometer out and took it rectally.  NO FEVER.  WTF?!

So I called the daycare back and told the teacher what the deal was, she apologized and said she would talk to the director about it.  She said that if I wanted I could bring him back.  When that's just a waste, I might as well stay by the time I bring him back and get back to work it would be time for me to leave again.

So obviously all night I am thinking about this and irritated, but I figured I'll talk to the director in the morning and it will be fine. Yea right!  I dropped him off this morning, the director did not say one thing to me about it.  As I was leaving I went in the office, showed her the sheet that they wrote down his "fevers" and then told her what happened.  Her response was "That is so weird, maybe he's just teething"  WHAT?!  I told her I was more upset with the fact that I was about to give him Tylenol for the fever that he didn't have!  She didn't say anything.

Seriously WTF?!  I am also irritated because I felt like she should have addressed the situation right away when I walked in, instead I had to bring it up.

I seriously considering looking for a new daycare.

Re: vent - daycare related

  • OMG this happened to me!

This one teacher was tracking on this sheet what her temps were and called me once it hit a certain point.  They were taking it throughout the day and watching her. It had happened before.

So one time I got called and said screw it we are going straight to the dr.   We get to the dr's office and they take her temp.  NO TEMP.   So dr. (working mom obviously) writes this nasty dr. note for me saying she does not take a temp and this is how you take a temp.  ha.   I was allowed to bring her back the next day.

Once she moved up to the next room, we did not have these problems.   I switched daycare and couldn't be happier.

You have to remember with some of these people, one less kid = less work.   It is kind of like one less file or project on your desk.   A temp guarantees at least 24 hours of less work.

  • I could see your irritation to some degree but I know sometimes I do not always get the temp right so I take it 5 times to be sure.  If this seemed to be a constant habit of getting called to pick the kid up and there was no temp after all, then I would be ticked.

Regarding the medicine, I would be one to always check a temp before administering medicine to the child.

Issue with the Director, I have my thoughts but not knowing the person, it is just picking possible thoughts out of the air.

Again, this is my opinion without having been in the same type of situation.

  • I've contemplated bringing in my thermometer to check before taking him home before. Might be something to think about the next time they call with this situation.
  • Definitely frustrating but not something I would consider switching daycares over.
  • That's happened to us twice now. Annoying, yes, but I assume they do it for every kid. That means that if a kid is sick they're not going to be there getting my kid sick. So it kind of goes both ways. I appreciate their caution, but those two days made me pretty angry. Kelly took her straight to the doctor the second time it happened and got a note that said she did not have any contagious illness and that she could return.
