My dog decided he loves headphones!

We've had our rescue, Wylie, for two weeks now and he has been a perfect angel... until yesterday.  We had been baby-gating him in the kitchen with a couple toys, a kong, a blanket, some music, and a bit of water.  Yesterday he decided to prove that he could jump the baby gate and proceeded to relieve himself all over our living room, chew through my husband's headphones, destroy my knitting project, eat some mexican gum which I have no idea where he found it, eat some of our fake logs, and destroy my husband's slippers.  We had to take him to the emergency vet because he broke out in hives but luckily the gum he found didn't have anything toxic!  I know this was probably our fault because he was bored, had seperation anxiety, or something... So today, we put him in a room we have with hardwood floors and a window ledge that he likes to sit on and look out of with some of his chew toys that he can't tear apart and stuff that smells like us.

I think tonight we're going to go get a crate.  I also signed us up for some obedience classes while at the vet because I'm thinking he has some confidence issues maybe?  He sometimes is skiddish around strangers and may growl if he's unsure but he seems to like other dogs.

I'm just frustrated and needed to vent so thank you for listening..

I know I'm a newbie on this board and I appreciate how nice you all have been to all the newbies around lately... It makes it a nice board to start posting on.

Re: My dog decided he loves headphones!

  • Definitely go the crate route! Dogs love having a safe den to retreat to. Plus it keeps him and your stuff all safe when you can't be there. Good luck!
  • I think a crate and some training sound like a good idea for your new family member! I'm glad he didn't manage to eat anything worse for him. Good luck with the transition.
  • Thanks! I think we're going to go out and buy a crate tonight and do some research on crate training.. I'm so glad he's okay and didn't get into something terrible!

  • We've lost two of the xbox headsets thanks to our doxie.  DH just doesn't learn that he needs to put his stuff out of reach (not just in the center of the coffee table).  Sounds like a crate is the way to go!  We got ours on Craigslist for $25 and it's worked out great, not to mention it was cheaper than buying a brand new one from the pet store.
