black history program menu
I am hosting a black history program and i need some menu options. the program is for young girls between the ages of 4-10. The theme is Black women in American History and Culture. I would like for the menu to go with the theme if that makes sense. Thanks in advance.
Re: black history program menu
You're asking for "the food of black American women." I don't believe there's an appropriate way to do that without being stereotypical, insensitive, and even racist. See: NBC's gaffe.
Black Americans eat all varieties of food, just like all the other races in the US. I would serve a non-themed menu of whatever girls aged 4-10 like to eat.

This.
This - but I'll go out on a limb here and say that what you were trying to do is celebrate the signifigant creative culinary contributions that African-Americans have made to our National American Cuisine - if that makes sense. Delicous things like Spoonbread Pudding, Greens and more are notable contributions from that community -which isn't to say that all African-American women eat this or that or any other thing.
What region of the US are you in? It might be fun to do a neighborhood or local inspired menu for the girls (things they might really eat too) and/or a sampling of things to showcase some culinary contributions of African-Americans.

BTW - not sure if you are familiar with "kid" food issues these days... but your menu should not have any nuts or peanuts or nut products and I would serve milk and water (not juice - I'm so tired of people giving my kids juice).
Fresh fruit I would say veggies too - but my kids will only eat carrots and celery
so well said
Yes, I agree with the previous posters. It's probably best to stick with a menu that is more "Age Appropriate" than "Themed". With that age group, especially...
Perhaps veggie crudites w/ranch dip, some fruit, cheeses and finger sandwiches.
Do you have a caterer in your area like this? (I've met Norma Jean in person and she is as lovely as she is sucessful). Her books might have some recipes in them for you to try...
