s/o What other funny to you words do the men in your life use?

It seems that men don't always know what to call the more feminine items that we use. Rouge? lol. What else does your SO or man friend say that you find funny?

DH did not know the difference between a dress and a skirt. He used dress to describe anything that wasn't pants. It took me over a year to break him of that habit.

I feel like there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns

  • The comforter vs. duvet vs. bedspread debate is a popular one in our house.
    This is my siggy.
  • H and I have an ongoing fight about mac & cheese. To me, the stuff with the powdered cheese packet is Blue Box, the kind with the packet of gooey cheese is kraft dinner, and the stuff I make with grated cheese and a roux is mac & cheese. To him, it's all mac& cheese, but grated cheese is homemade mac&cheese.

Those are 3 different things to me.  A comforter is the big puffy thing without a removable cover. Duvet is puffy with a removable cover. Bedspread are those old school thinish covers, generally itchy on one side) that I now only see when I stay in a cheap hotel.

  • DH and I just had the dress vs. skirt conversation last weekend!  I still don't think he gets it.  I'll have to think for a while about any other ones.

lol. I am team Mr. Broc here. I call the boxed powder stuff 'box mac 'n cheese, " the gooey packet "shells and cheese" (is it always shells? I don't eat that often, but did have the Annie's version yesterday- it's on sale at Target.), and the real stuff "real mac 'n cheese" or sometimes homemade.

Those are my definitions as well.  To him they are one and the same.

  • Ooooo I thought of another one - "Stockings".

I wear either tights or hose (yeah, I know, but I work in a conservative office).  WTF are stockings?

YES!!! DH uses that too. I'm always like, "Yes, honey, go get my garter belt so I can put on my stockings." What??

  • It isnt really a word but more of a phrase he uses...he needs to "go across town" for something, the location he is usually talking about is like 10 minutes away so to him that is across town. I blame it on him living in a semi small town and it took them about 25 minutes to get to the grocery store.

  • He has no clue about make-up and just calls all of it war paint.

He's also baffled by the fact that I have so many electrical appliances for my hair.  Blowdryer, curling iron, flat iron, hot rollers (2 sets...one for travel and one for everyday).  He thinks that they are all the same thing (with the exception of the blowdryer, he knows that's different than, say, a curling iron).  He just calls them all curling irons.  I don't even attempt to explain them all.

The phrase 'Kraft Dinner' reminds me of that Bare Naked Ladies song "If I had a Million Dollars". I had never heard it called Kraft Dinner until I heard that song.  You are only the seond person I have ever heard call it that.

  • It's a largely Canadian terminology, but I grew up like a 3 hour drive from Ontario so it's not a huge leap.

So really, he's disrespecting my cultural idiolect and as such is totally racist.

That was the song we danced to at our wedding reception. Glad hearing Kraft Dinner made someone else think of it, too :)

He calls pop "soda", which in Minnesota is odd, we all call it pop. I'm not sure why he started calling it soda. It's just been in the last couple years, and it's not like we moved out of the state.

He has no clue about makeup. It's usually referred to as 'that stuff you put on your eyes', which could mean shadow, mascara, or eyeliner.

    Oh, FFS.
  • FI is from central Illinois.  He calls it pop.  I'm from Wisconsin and call it soda.  He now calls it soda because he's in my territory and DS and I made fun of him until he just gave in! LOL

Also, I call it a bubbler and he had no clue what I meant until I explained it.  He said "oh, you mean a drinking fountain?".  Um, no...here in SE Wisconsin it's a bubbler!

  • Mr. Broc is completely insensitive.

I would have no idea what a bubbler was.

eta- Wikipedia says a bubbler is a water fountain, but I was thinking what Broc was thinking.

It's a bubblah in Boston speak.

  • To elaborate, a bubbler is a pipe used to smoke marijuana.  It contains water to reduce the harshness of the smoke, hence the name (it bubbles).

I guess I'm dumb because I have no idea what you are talking about, but I have a feeling I may not want to know what you're talking about.  I also have a feeling that if I google it at work I'll be escorted out of the building! LOL

  • Fizzy drinks are to be referred to as "Coke".  None of this soda or pop nonsense.

BF also refers to any eye makeup as mascara.

Nah, a bong has water in it. The difference is, bongs are usually vertical, while a bubbler is mostly horizontal. Bongs usually also contain a removable carb, where with bubblers you pack the weed into a non-removable bowl with a hole on the side like a pipe.

Or maybe this is the Blue Box of marijuana paraphernalia, lol.

  • I crack up every time he calls someone "butt cheese" while road rages.   He also will say something like, "let's go Schmuck Boy D"   I thought he was saying "Schmuck Boyardee" for the longest time.   I have no idea where he got the phrase, but it makes me laugh every time.

I call any Macaroni and Cheese "macaroni and cheese."  I make absolutely no distinction between any of them.

I also call it soda instead of pop, only because I think soda sounds better (and "pop" is the Ohio lingo).

I can't think of anything else he says that's different.

Fizzy drinks in Boston are all "tonic" although I started using soda as I outgrew some of my Bostonian-isms, along with getting a drink from the "bubblah" (water fountain, not bong) and going to the "packie" (liquor store).

As for what men say that one that pops to mind is "on your period". I don't know why they all seem to say it, but I'm not ON it. I HAVE it.

I think DH is also one of those men that calls all eye-related make-up mascara. I wonder if he realizes how much I have taught him over the years.
