Deli Meat

I'm full of questions today. Figures that they all relate to food.

Do you feed your toddler deli meat? It is on the menu at DC and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Ham, I really unsure of and turkey I feel better about but not confident. I guess it doesn't help that I don't know the brand and quality of the product.

My fear is of the nitrates and that the meat is not fully meat but bits and pieces of meat held together by something else.

Thoughts?

Re: Deli Meat

  • I personally do not serve him deli meat.   But if daycare does, which she usally doesn't, I ask her to only give it to him once a week.
  • The closer we get to solids, the more I wonder how to monitor what she will have at daycare... I don't know what to let go of and what to stick to my guns about.

Deli meat freaks me out... I rarely eat it.

  • We get our deli meat from the butcher so I know where it is coming from, but it's still not the best thing. I get turkey for myself occasionally, but it's turkey breast carved like Thanksgiving. Granted, I've changed my tune because I just want DD to eat anything! Id' seriously feed her hot dogs and chicken nuggets (home made) at this point everyday if she'd eat. Kid only wants to eat yogurt and is siding big time on the weight scale in the wrong direction
  • So first I'll straight answer your question- no, I don't usually feed James deli meat.

The caveat is that I don't because it's not something I buy regularly due to the expense and there are other things that are just as good to eat that are more of a guarantee James will eat and not waste. For example, I would choose PB&J or tuna salad or egg salad over a turkey sandwich for him. Or I'd get him soup or pizza or a real meal if we were out.

He has had deli stuff before and I dont' think twice. We occasionally have ham Italians for dinner, we had finger sandwiches with ham and turkey on Xmas eve, and we've put sliced ham in grilled cheese sandwiches along with sliced tomato.

I'm ok with just about everything in moderation and am confident his diet is good based on what I and daycare feed him. I haven't given any thought to nitrates or additives in deli meat for James (or myself.)

  • We don't usually buy them because we are not big deli meat eaters. Grace actually does like pepperoni and will eat that if we happen to have it around.  Liam barely eats anything so I doubt he would even try them.

  • I don't mostly because of the sodium. The BLW book made me paranoid about salt! Once in awhile I'll give her one piece with lunch, but we don't have it in the house often at all so it's rare. I don't even cook regular ham because of the salt content.

Erika, I totally want an Italian, now! They opened 2 Amato's in Manchester and within a year or two both closed :(

  • Marcus doesn't eat a lot of it, because we don't eat a lot of it, but I'm not opposed to having him have it in moderation like Erika said.  I know at his daycare they only buy nitrate-free stuff, so I don't have to worry about it there.

  • What's up with all these kids not eating??  :-)  We eat deli meat regularly, but Abby doesn't eat much of anything.  I've given it to her, but she doesn't bite.  har, har pun intended!
