moving locally costs?

We plan on moving in the next 2 months. We live in a 2000sq ft house (3br) and the garage is pretty pack full of totes and bigger items....yeah we have to park outside. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure what it cost to hire a mover...I'd like them to do the packing as well since with a toddler, 2 dogs and a huge belly, me packing is not in the cards...at least I'm hoping. We'll be moving from Katy off of Fry to the general area of Jersey Village/Cypress so less than 20 miles from where we are now.

Anyone do a similar move? We can't see it costing several thousands like it did went we moved from PA to here. Dh is thinking under $500. I'm thinking it isn't much different from our interstate move.

Thanks!

Re: moving locally costs?

  • $90-125/hr depending on the number of people and day of the week you move....  It took them about 5 hours to pack our 3/2 house (they didn't pack everything, I did clothes, towels, easy stuff) and 7 hours to move (2 trips, we have lots of crap).

  • I don't know the exact cost since it was a while ago, but I believe it was about $80 an hour.  DH packed most of his stuff in his apartment and so it was literally just moving 10 miles into the house and I think it was close to $300.  So I think it's definitely more than $500 if you're talking about a full garage that you want them to pack for you.

I think the best bet would to find a cleaning lady that would do the packing for a lot cheaper...like $20-30 an hour. And then have the movers come to load the truck, drive, and unload.

  • The stuff in the garage is already packed more or less. it's all in boxes that we didn't unpack from the move and totes...stuff like that and outdoor toys and the like so the garage isn't really need to be packed so to speak. I think we need them mostly for the furniture and lugging stuff around and sticking on the truck. There will be my china cabinet to pack and the kitchen, stuff like that, but most of the items i guess can be on the truck without putting in an addition box or container.

We paid $89/hr.  That was 3 people and all the materials.  They are VERY fast.  They are experts and know exactly how to do it quickly.

  • i just paid $75/hr for two guys and a giant truck.  they disassembled the bed and put it back together for me.
  • Cool! Thanks ladies! So we could safely figure $1000 and probably not need all that. Good to know. That is such a load off my mindBig Smile
