So there's been a lot of talk lately about it going private. What do you think?
Do you want the option?
I personally think it would be nice to have private & public boards OR maybe some "by request/invitation only" boards....as for instance, I was planning a shower for a friend, and she's active on pinterest, so it was hard for me to keep my ideas for the shower altogether there, without her seeing.
But then again, if everything goes private, then there won't be the plethora of shared ideas available to others, which I for one really like.
Thoughts?

I haven't heard that before, but I agree with your points. I would like to have the option of hiding some boards from people (like my SIL that keeps stealing my nursery ideas), but I would definitely miss the huge selection of ideas that I find from complete strangers now.
Although, I guess the main idea of Pinterest is to have a place to keep all of the things *you* find on the internet in one place and the bonus is getting to see what everyone else finds.. I suppose I'd have to look harder to find my own bits of internet awesome to pin.
I don't have a reason right now to have a private board but I don't hate the idea.
That would be a great feature and better than making boards just straight up private.
Hopefully they're not consulting the Nest for ideas on how to upgrade their site.
Exactly. A lot of my brides follow me so I feel like I have to temper stuff like that so as not to seem inappropriate/unprofessional.
It already looks as if they've taking pointers on the "search" function.
Or maybe it's search "function."
A lot of my friends and family have been wanting an option to add some privacy. Either blocking people from boards or full private settings.
With the amount that people pin things I don't see it being an issue with not seeing all the creativeness.

I sometimes think I would appreciate some privacy settings...when I was collecting ideas for Christmas gifts I had notes like "good idea for MIL" in my descriptions to keep things straight...then she joined Pinterest and I had to go through and delete all of those notes to keep her from seeing them. I've also opted against pinning some inappropriate jokes that would be hilarious to pin for my siblings, but not so much for certain others.
In response to the concern that then there wouldn't be as many pins available..I wouldn't mind if private pins were still included in the public search results/ browsing categories but were kept anonymous...so the idea is still available for repinning, you just can't see who pinned it before you.

I think the purpose of Pinterest is 2 fold. Like KImmer, mentioned, it's a place to book mark your ideas/finds. On the other hand, it is supposed to be a way to find things you probably never would have found on your own. So, if people are pinning everything privately, you lose that ability, which is what I really like about it. I like finding the blogs, recipes, craft ideas, etc that I never would have found on my own to pin in the 1st place.
I would like the option. I have a board where I am pinning 1st birthday picture ideas and all my Bumpie friends are on my friends list re-pinning the ideas I find, probably to use too. I'd rather hide that particular board.
Also, surprise party stuff would be good to hide. Or ideas you do not want all of your friends seeing/taking.

Exactly. Again that is the point of Pinterest. If you don't want anyone to see your ideas, start a folder and keep bookmarks on your computer.
