Ziva and Collins want to play with each other SOOO BAD! We have them trained such that with a very stern 'ENOUGH!' they stop whatever it is they're doing (usually pulling on the leash or trying to have puppy battles). Well I just had to tell them to stop three times in about 5 minutes because they want to play tug.
I then took every tug toy and put it in a basket on top of Collins' crate and she just sat there and looked at it I'm REALLY hoping the vet gives us the clearance for some puppy battles after Ziva's staples are out on Wednesday evening. I think I'm gonna have to get DH to take Collins for a long walk tonight, which is just gonna be so mean to Ziva but maybe we'll give her one of the special chew bones that we only give them for 15-20 minutes at a time...
Sigh.... this sucks....
Re: I feel like a mean mom :(
Oh, You are "so" mean!
Yes, protecting your dog who just had surgery from further injury, or re-injury, makes you the meanest Mommy ever Haha!
In all seriousness though, I wouldn't get your hopes up on the Vet giving you any clearance for romping after the staples come out (sorry!!). There is still a very strict activity regimne that they want you to follow... or at least our Vet had us follow, for weeks...to months post-op in order to allow the scar tissue to form properly...&, also just b/c...your dog just had surgery, to a major joint! Don't forget or downplay how huge that is! She still needs time to recover!!
I hate to be a Debbie downer here, but you really have to keep Ziva settled! It is SO tough. Believe me, I know! & you know I know! That being said though, I cannot imagine how much harder it is to do w/2 dogs in the house!!! I really feel for ya!
Just remember, its tougher on YOU then it is on them!! They are/will be fine!! Yes, LOTS of walks for Collins are a MUST, even after days @ doggie daycare...or whatever you decided to arrange for her. Her fatigue is critical for keeping Ziva calm!! & if they get squirrely in the house, do short bursts of obedience "training" (sit, stay...etc. Make it fun & challenging, but the short bursts are key b/c these likely are already skills they have mastered
so they will get bored fast!), or hide & seek (either you hide, or you hide a toy...or a treat or something) This is just another part of the deal that falls under the "harder on your then it is on them" category! I totally get it, I completely 100% do. I mean, who wants to come home after a long day & then have to supervise & then entertain your adult dogs all night?! But, just remember that its temporary, & its critically important for Ziva's safety AND the succes of her surgery. &, if all else fails, just separate them! (Gah! I know! The ultimate mean-ness!) Again, just remember, they'll survive! Its just you that might not
Hahaha! GL friend!!
hahhaha thanks. Collins about got herself put in the free dog box last night when she decided the bone she was chewing wasn't good enough but the trim was. *facepalm* needless to say I took her to doggie daycare today even though I'll be home most of the day and told them "please tire her out so I don't give her away!"
I think what killed me is mine and DH's work hours were so crazy this week. Good idea on the bursts of training. Especially since I'm trying to teach them something new right now. I wish we still lived close to the petco the does puppy playgroup a couple nights a week for an hour, that would be so useful right now!
And yeah, at this point I'm more worried about my survival at this point. I can't wait till those stinkin staples are out so at least I don't have to cone her all the time!
